Dorian.

Well, it's September in Florida. Sister's boarding up in West Palm, The folks in Savannah didn't make the trip down today. (Son in law will deploy on tuesday) So I'll have the Wife, Thing 2, & her thing's 1 & 2 to care for if Dorian follows the track from landfall near West Palm, along the coast through Jacksonville, and then up to Savannah. It feels like it's going to be a troublesome start to September.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Looks like my Sister's clan is heading for Key West and relative safety. (pardon the pun)
Seems like I'll be handing the keys to the Castle to Thing 3 & her clan while I head up North and extract the folks in Savannah.

Working the Orange Box for the last couple of days, I've once again witnessed the sheer panic of folks that I once reserved as experiences at the bottom of the cable. Won't be long to the armed guards return as Florida has been placed under Emergency Conditions, but it takes all the patience I have to keep the sheep-people from jumping out of thier fleece at the mere thought of KAOS. It's hard to imagine what happens to folks under the extreme stress of life or death at the bottom of the cable...............

Thank You for that. Not sure I deserve it, but Thank You all the same. Looks like we got a booking Weds night at Fort Benning. Hopefully that shall be far enough west to stay out of harm's way. Thanks for the support. Well, got a dawn launch for Savannah, so I'll be off the air for a few days.

I forgot just how many cotton fields and peach orchards surrounded Fort Benning.
Now I've just got to wait until the all clear is sounded and all those folks from Savannah can go back home. Oh well, at least it was the first time I got to drive on the wrong side of I16. But we all are save. Thanks for the support.

We live in Palm Bay, Florida 10 miles west of the beaches. Friday Aug 30 we prep'ed the house and yard..... Everything off the patio, storm shutters up, all potted plants inside, etc... We stocked up on storm provisions early June at the start of Hurricane season which included drinking water, non-perishable foods, and 40 gal of gas for our 6.5 Kw Honda generator.

We sweated it out until Tuesday Sept 10th at 0200 hrs when the eye moved about 80 miles off shore and abeam of us...... All I can say is BOY were we fortunate..! All we got was some winds between 40-60 mph and very little rain. Things could have been so very much worse!

Being a Florida boy never have I experienced a hurricane that moved over the water as slowly as Dorian did. It seemed like a month for it to move north of us. Again, we were very fortunate. I really feel for the northern Bahama Islands and the folks north that was hit harder......!!!!!!

The season ends November 30th.....

I am reminded of August 2004, when two storms hit Florida simultaneously.

I was supposed to check out a brand new captain on his first trip with passengers and the first leg was from Charlotte to Orlando. Tropical storm Bonnie was on one side of the state while Hurricane Charlie was on the other. To get into Orlando we had to go for the field goal.

The winds at the Orlando were near the crosswind limits for the airplane, and this poor guy had a "Why me?" look on his face when he showed up at the cockpit. He was supposed to fly the first leg, but I didn't think that was fair under the circumstances, and he was mightily relieved when I told him I'd fly it.

Sure enough, on the arrival into MCO the winds were so strong from the right that the passengers on the left side could see the runway on final approach. It was somewhat sporty getting on the ground, but we got everybody to Disney World and the captain went on to check out in somewhat less challenging circumstances.

CapitanGyro,,,,, That's what I'd call a major 'cross-wind-crab' over the threshold and quick rudder action at the last minute. It's a wonder you didn't clip a wing tip. Good job!

Seems that the 'Mouse' was with you........ (Disney World)

As you've probably surmised, my decision was also self-serving...I knew the chances of us not making headlines were better with the more experienced pilot flying.

It was a career move.

That reminded me of a ride I took with my boss some years back, he's not really comfortable flying.

We were coming back from the AWS show in NO and had to divert due to weather to Yeager Airport in Charleston. Because of some flight path restrictions that were mountain and chemical plant related we had to make a couple of pretty exciting turns to get lined up with the runway. We missed the first 2 attempts but nailed it on the third and my boss got 3 good looks at the ground out of his port side window.

I think the a/c was a Beechcraft 99 which is essentially a canoe with wings and he hasn't flown in anything smaller than a 757 since.

Small plane pilots need to remember to stay below the clouds if they lack instruments. I was on a ride along when a plea for help came across. Dummy wanted help getting back down through the clouds.

Always remember:

Take off are optional but landings aren't.

The one certainty when airborne is that you shall eventually contact some part of the Earth. LOL

I do have more Carrier Takeoffs than Landings, but I was merely one of the "Tuberat's" along for the ride........LOL
