Closest I ever got to the military was being a cub scout but now I have a granddaughter that is interested in the Marine Corps FET program. She's going on a 4 mile hike this weekend with 40# of sand and new boots... Aside from giving her her first blade, advising heavy socks and to position the pack as high as she could, I didn't have much to offer her but a wry grin. Any sage advice from any of you folks that have been there and done that ? TIA. |

I wished as hard as any parent could wish that I could get at least one of my daughters interested in a military career. A few years ago I took them to an Air Force Academy reunion. As we approached the Academy from the north, we passed Cathedral Rock, about three miles from the cadet area. "Look girls", I said, "we used to run from down there all the up here and back, carrying big rocks." There were a few seconds of silence from the back seat. Finally, a little voice said, "Why?" |

Kid did six miles yesterday with a 40# pound pack, two of them double time. She's a bit bowed up today. 30 guys, 5 girls - 6 of the guys fell out. |

The six guys that "fell out" - they got detached for another "mission".

I bucked the laws of averages in my family; the last family member to serve was during the Civil War. OP, the FET program ( I believe ) is an additional duty assigned during the mob process. What does she want to do as a primary MOS?

Aviation would seem to be her focus now. I explained to her that there was other stuff she would have to be able to do first to even have a shot, like, Marine Corps stuff. She was undeterred, however; apparently that over 7 ft. tall Captain she's been talking with -is- a good salesman... ![]()
