| If you are watching the weather channel!
In the advent that you are watching the weather channel and the Spray painted writing on the Plywood states: " Jim Cantore We left Home" and it's in Ya'lls handwritting! Is there any better Survivalist Preparations? ![]() Now comes the more difficult question, where do you start (what's the least expensive) to prepare? Having worked several natural disasters during my career, even when sitting on your roof water will be the first priority. But you would be amazed at how few people have a simple signal mirror or roadside flare to get a Helo's attention while on the roof. Last edited by M118LR; 10-08-2015 at 06:52 AM. Reason: part 2 |

I'm even more amazed at the number of people who build their homes in a flood plain, or a valley, or on a beach. As a species we understand gravity; we know where water's going to go. And yet we build there. Anyone sitting on the roof of a flooded house has already flunked one of life's most elementary lessons. The fact that they haven't planned for their own rescue should be taken for granted. Amending the federal flood insurance program so that a payout could never be made for a second claim on the same property wouldn't end human stupidity, but it might mean that rescue crews could avoid risking their lives hoisting Darwin Award winners to safety over and over again. |

and, that, gentlemen, is why i'm at 3400 feet- mind you, in 2013 we did have a flood that put downtown and that infrastructure under 8-10 feet of water( in some places 22 feet ) for a couple of weeks-- the dry dams flooded, all the "low ground" was inundated- so you really can't plan ahead - now they've deepened the rivers, ruined the fishing, but it's all these dummies that insist on putting their million dollar homes on the flood plain b/c they like the "look" of the river- I've seen enough river to last me a lifetime

No one is ever going to be able to foresee all the natural disasters that can befall them. How many people are living West of the Mississippi, yet they all know that Yellowstone is overdue? https://www.google.com/search?q=yell...xXj7S-axz5o%3D Maybe my Service time has conditioned me to always be prepared for an Evacuation. I could even understand finding that your flare has expired, but how difficult is it to stuff a survival tin with a mirror into your pocket? |

Despite being in FL, I am not in a flood zone. St. Augustine's record is 22 Feet of storm surge. The end of the runway at the regional Airport where I work is officially 10 feet above sea level. The Average Elevation of St. Johns County is = Sea Level. Geoff Who is still nervous about really heavy rains. |

So I guess that means I should abandon trying to convince the superannuated rels that their retirement incomes would go farther down in the Sunshine State? LOL

There are already too many damnyankees in the Miami area and you want more? ![]() Note to all: My Great Grandmother who lived through Lincoln's unpleasantness all was insisted it was one word and lower case. Last edited by csmkersh; 10-10-2015 at 01:25 PM. |

Top, my rels are pretty conservative--even my aunt the public-education employee, though that may be the constant bombardment from my mother and myself countering the WEA propaganda. (Mom and I have been steadily working on her over the years, and one of her big brags to us last election was "I voted No on 594!"--I suspect that was because she didn't like the idea of me being the only one legally able to defend the homestead, especially since I'm still in the process of getting us moved in with her.*) *Tell ya what, YOU try moving thirty years' worth of stuff one duffel-bag at a time by hour-and-a-half-each-way cross-county bus ride because nobody else will help you move their crap even by giving you a lift! Maybe not "Bible Belt Conservative", but we're too far Right to be able to stay in this Left Coast Hellhole much longer. (The angle: with how I've had my own career crippled by my mother's medical issues and her needing a near-full-time caregiver, not to mention my aunt's aging and related issues... pretty much the only way *any* of us escape fropm Hellifornia Del Norte is if we move as a unit.) And Miami's an OH EFF NO--I don't wanna be anywhere NEAR Debbie the Deranged. Seriously, the eyes don't lie and that woman LOOKS like she's a hand grenade with a faulty pin, just waiting for a chance to go off... Last edited by Diamondback; 10-10-2015 at 04:42 PM. |

Trust me, it's the eyes and the mouth. Ever notice how she looks like a piranha ready to take a bite out of somebody?
