SKS Project Questions
I'm feeling the need/urge for a new "project gun" but can't afford one at this time.

I have a Russian-made, milled-receiver SKS I bought over 20 years ago that I've never played with or shot, so it will be "new to me."

Thinking of turning it into a "poor man's Tanker Garand." My question is about Tech-Sights. Do you have to take off the original open sights to use them? And, if so, how do you do this?

I won't do anything that would render the rifle unable to be returned to issued condition, as I understand the milled SKSs have some value.

Re: SKS Project Questions
Our SKS is buried in my wife's car's trunk, in a sealed plastic bag, in a box, so I can't easily access it...But...

From looking at their ads, I believe that you would need to remove the original sight's leaf, to use the Tech-Sight assembly. In the ads I've seen, the display SKS has had its sight leaf removed.

I took the original rear-sight leaf off and replaced it with a big, coarse peep. If I remember correctly, you depress the leaf at its front end, against spring pressure, and it pops out to the front. You might need a piece of scrap wood to press with.

Re: SKS Project Questions
It's your rifle, of course, Snake, but personally I would sell that Russian one to a collector in its original condition and pick up a Norinco or a Yugo SKS to tinker with. Some of those Russian ones are getting scarce. What year and maker is it? Also, has it been arsenal refurbed or not? (The little square with the slash through it is the refurb mark, along with the bolt being blued) Is it a KBI import? If nothing else, it might fund a different project if you find the right buyer. Or not; again- your rifle, your choice. 8)
