DECENT AK SLING......

I am having a bit of trouble finding a decent cheap AK sling. The main trouble is the forward attachment point is a small square ring on the fore-end retention plate.
I do have what is reputedly a "Kalashnikov sling," a leather sling with a clip and that's just find ... the problem is the other end is a buckle and I can't for the life of me figure out how this was supposed to be attached to the fire arm.
Any help would be appreciated. [center:ujnzt1cv][/center:ujnzt1cv]

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

Typically the buckle end threads through a sling bar on the side of the buttstock, and the clip clips on to the ring on the front.

If you have no sling bar in set into the buttstock, it might be a hassle.

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

No "sling bar." There is a "D" ring on the rear stock on the bottom, as on many rifles.
I actually obtained a sling purportly for an SKS which is OK on the stock end... it has a leather attachment that folds over and attaches via a rivet-like plug through a slot in the leather.
It's the front end that's frustrating me. I bought a clip thingie from Wal Mart I thought would work but it's too large to be really flexible.
If I could figure out the fore end the SKS sling would be great --- or atleast good for what I need it for.
The leather AK sling would be OK too ... but hang it, that rear end buckle!!!!!

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

are you tring to put this on an AK? or what is the rifle?

I ran into the same situation with my 556, I ended up 550'ing a sling point that works just fine....

i prefer the simple AK, or M14 style slings over any other tacticool sling.

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

Well, what I have is actually a Romanian WASR-10. It has a D ring on the bottom of the buttstock. The same basic design as a bazillion rifles have ... albeit a rather cheaper version of it. The main problem is the fore end attachment, as I said, its integral to the plate that attaches the wood to the barrel, and it's SMALL -- really, almost squarish.
A normal AK sling (apparantlt from photos I've seen) has a hook for this attachment. I obtained a hook from Wal Mart but it's so large it isn't flexible .... and the AK sling I have as a buckle and apparantly is wrong for the buttstock "D" ring.
I don't think what you showed in your link would work very well. I don't need "tacticool" or a "one point" sling or anything. Just a basic sling .... and a way to figure out how to make that forend attach!

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

Most AK's have the small ring attached to the hand guard retainer for a front sling mount. The later European rifles have a smaller loop than the earlier rifles.

The "D ring" on the rear of the buttstock is a "sling swivel".

To attach an AK sling:

Thread the front of the sling (the part with the snap OR a leather strap) through the butt stock swivel, then through the steel buckle.
Put it through one of the loops of the buckle, then through the other.
This is how you adjust the sling later.

Then snap the steel snap onto the ring on the barrel, OR if it has a leather strap, slip that through the loop and fasten it with the small "button" on the strap.
Note that later AK's front loop is smaller, and the leather strap may not fit.
In other words, you probably have the wrong sling for your rifle.

What you may want to do is just "cut to the chase" and buy a sling that's made to fit these smaller loops. These have a steel snap hook on the front:

Shop around, lots of places sell these snap hook AK slings made by a number of countries.

Another option is to attach a heavy split ring to the rifle, then attach the sling to that.
You can buy larger "key ring" type splint rings at most hardware stores.

Here's a really nice AK web site that shows a lot of AK pictures. Here's one showing a good look at the sling attachment system:

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

A little late but I have put these Israeli slings on my Galil and my PTR and really like the way they carry and fit.

http://www.zahal.org/rifle/p6.htm

They come with two lengths of para cord for fitting and are availible in OD or black.
The price ain't $7.00 but they aren't too much and are well made.

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

Thanks BG. If the one from Copes doesn't work I'll try that. It looks good.

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

OK!

The leather sling will not work that way. Fitting the clip through the stock ring works but it just DOES NOT fit through the buckle on the sling for the return trip to the forend!
I dunno what the Russkies were thinking .....

When the sling from Copes gets here I'll feed it through that way .... maybe the people who designed that one actually know how to use rulers .......

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

The East German sling from Copes arrived today!
All is well! Thanks for the link, dfariswheel, and for the link to the photos of how it is attached. The E. Germans actually had rulers, apparantly: the clip part goes right through the buckle part and it attaches to the buttstock & forend in the approved manner.

I love this websight!

Re: DECENT AK SLING......

I put a HK sling on my AK because I just didn't fancy the blue German canvas sling that came with it. Mine too is the Romanian WASR 10, but mine has a standard sling swivel at the butt stock, and the square ring on the barrel.
