If I had the money...

I was at a gunshop the other day looking for something very specific; a used Marlin 1895 cowboy rifle in .45-70. Why? Just because. But on the used rack they had a century Galil. What a freakin awesome rifle that is. If I had $800, I'd traded it for a Galil. true story.

Re: If I had the money...

No offense Dex, but I would have taken the Marlin. Something about that 45-70 I find appealing. One of my favorite "low-profile" guns is my Mralin 44 Mag. It holds 10 rounds of magnum or 11 specials and is very accurate to boot. The gun wich is in about 97% condition was built in 1977 and cost $295 OTD.

Re: If I had the money...

I was almost seduced by a Galil back in the '80s, but then I came to my senses and bought my first AR for about half as much.

Galils are just hella sexy, but check out the price of the mags before you buy one.

I DID eventually buy an Armi-Jager AP84, which is an Italian-made .22LR Galil lookalike. WAY fun to shoot and much cheaper than a real one.

Re: If I had the money...

I have both a 5.56 and 7.62 Galil, as well as an R4 and I tell you, they are terrific. The R4 is a pre LM4 but it only has a two position switch, with a welded knob above the fire position. It was in a very small batch that century got in sometime in the late 80's. I also have two Valmets which are also darn good, The biggest part has been mags, but I find that when Galils were unavailable, the cost of mags dropped significantly and I was able to buy enough to feel comfortable with all the sport shooting I am going to do with the rifles.

Re: If I had the money...

yeah, afterwords I looked on gunbroker, and found mags going to $40 a pop. heh. Kinda kills the fun of that. considering I can get 30rd mags for $11 for my AR... The Galil is a spectacular looking rifle though. Maybe one day.

Re: If I had the money...

Capt'n , if ya wants it go get it . I kept thinking that I wanted an FAL untill I realized that I wouldn't just stop at one . No , I'd end up with extra barrels and parts plus two hundred magazines . I decided that if the whole thing was just to see how well I could burn up surplus ammo , a rifle I already have would be fine . Besides , I have the extra barrels , parts and magazines already

The level 45/70 is a good goal you will be happy to reach .

Re: If I had the money...

Dex, the 45-70 Guide Gun is a nice rifle and pretty usefull for deer & bear and is just fun to shoot.
But it is likely to be availible in a year while that Galil won't be.
I just received a CAI Galil I bought off GB just ahead of the panic and I'm pretty happy with it. Accuracy is close to the DPMS M4 I have and feels right. Mags are getting up there but another owner at the range uses the AR adapter and has had no complaints. He has promised to let me try it to see if I want to go that route.
It would be nice to be able to use my stack of AR mags.

Re: If I had the money...

HAHAHAHAHA!

The stock on my AP80 (like the one shown, but right side up) has the shortest length of pull I've ever seen. I ended up putting a big block of something at the butt and covering it over with a sleeve just to make it comfortable to shoot. It's only reliable with Remington Golden Bullets--other brands don't have the power to run the action. Great fun to shoot.

Re: If I had the money...

I had the FAMAS version (same gun different clothes). Very slick and fun, but it would only function with CCI Stingers which kinda ruins the fun if you have to spend that much to feed it.

Re: If I had the money...

A little off topic, but of the same vein. I was just looking at CETME's and G3's, HK91 and PTR-91's. I was going to pick up at least one CETME a couple years back when they were still available for about $250-$280 in that last sales push before parts supplies were gone. I was driving to the store, but couldn't find it and was running out of time. In the meantime, there were a couple of other things that came up, so I delayed that purchase. Well, I looked at prices recently, and needless to say, they AINT $280 +/- out the door!!...lol oh well, it happens to many of us I guess.

Re: If I had the money...

I saw new-build Galil clones in the new Shotgun News for $599 wholesale. That's a deal if they work at all!

The mags are still kinda spendy, though, and they seemed to have a limited supply of them (would only sell you two if you bought a gun).

Re: If I had the money...

I have an IMI Galil Model 372 and was lucky to buy it before prices got ridiculous. Same with magazines. I have an M16 magazine adaptor that works with it just fine. It is a nice rifle, but a little heavy in the ARM configuration.

If you buy a Century you are really rolling the dice. Many seem to have problems.

I have several .556 rifles, and My Daewoo K2 I have to put at the top of the list.
