Keeping black rifles black

Had the day off today, so on a whim I decided to refinish my FAL lower receiver. Original finish appears to be paint, so I went to the local Auto Zone and picked up a can of engine block paint (heat resistant to 1200 degrees F). After thoroughly cleaning the detail-stripped lower, I applied several coats of the black paint. Instructions on can recommend curing at 300-600 degrees for maximum heat resistance, so lower is currently baking away in the oven. Will let you all know how it works out. When cured, it's supposed to be resistant to solvent and fuel.

WOW!!! It worked great! Wound up doing lower receiver, dustcover, and rear sight assembly. Baked at 500 deg. F for a little over an hour, then let parts cool. Reassembled rifle, and it looks 500% better. What used to look all beat and scratched up now looks like a new gun.

I was most concerned about the areas where the takedown and selector levers rub. Heard bad things about Gunkote flaking off when applied in this manner. After running both levers through numerous times, the takedown lever shows no wear, and the selector shows a slight wear line which was expected, but absolutely no flaking! Haven't put any solvent to it yet, as I want to maximize the cure time, but it already stands up to oil. Overall finish looks and feels like parkerizing, at a fraction of the cost and effort. Paint is Dupli-color, cost like $5.39 after tax, and is available at Auto Zone (I'm sure other auto parts places would have this or something like it). I'm VERY satisfied with the way this turned out.

Should be working again. Hunt101 is down, so I've been jumping around to different image hosting sites, but I'm maxing out on the bandwith limits. Not sure how long they'll stay up this time...

How about fire engine red? Glossy egg yolk yellow?
