Picked up a DSA G1 FAL - photos

Hey, folks.

Here are a few photos of the brand spankin' new DSA G1 I picked up a couple of weeks ago. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet due to the crappy weather we've been having, but if it performs only half as well as it looks, I'm definitely in for a treat!

***EDIT*** I removed the photos because it turns out they were waaaaay too big for some folks and were on the verge of destroying the world as we know it. Or so it would seem. If you want to view the images in a place that's free from such danger, please go here:

***EDIT***

I don't know much about FALs -- this is my first one! -- but it seems that DSA did a pretty good job in replicating the G1. The handguards appear to be honest to gosh metal G1 deals. I couldn't find any H&K marked parts, though. The German writing on the left side of the receiver is a nice touch, as is the fake select-fire settings (the notched selector lever doesn't allow it to even switch to the FA setting). The last photo shows the fake flash-hider... my least favorite thing about this rifle. Per the info included with the accessories/warranty info, this rifle was built on 25 March 2004... before the AWB sunsetted. Too bad DSA threads their flash hiders on... it would have been nice to put a real one back on.

Anyhow, it's definitely a great rifle. When I pulled it out of the case, the wifey said "Wow. It looks mean." I'm looking forward to some range time with this bad boy! :P

Cheers,

~ Greg ~

Wow, thats a nice looking rifle. I suppose you will have to hurry up and shoot the barrel out so you can get a new one with the proper muzzle device, instead of that Kinton modified pretender that is on there now... Did DSA solder it? I havent heard of a nice way to get those off

Did H7K produce G1s? I thought they were made by FN, or Steyr...

Yeah, DSA used a new barrel with a threaded muzzle (as opposed to the original barrel with the stud to twist the FH on/off) and silver soldered those buggers in place, so it would be really difficult to remove the phony FH without causing damage to the barrel; it would take a lot of heat, which would probably discolor the barrel or worse -- it's not worth the risk, IMO.

All (~100,000) of the G1s were originally manufactured by FN in Belgium between 1957-1958, though H&K did manufacture some of the replacement parts. Steyr built the STG-58s for the Austrian military (Steyr is an Austrian company), whereas FN actually built all of the G1s for West Germany. DSA said the parts kits they use for their STG-58 rifles are primarily the Steyr kits, but since Steyr didn't actually make the G1 they use FN kits and/or US made parts. From what I've learned so far, a lot of folks have found H&K marked parts (i.e. top cover) in their kits. No such luck on this one.

Cheers,

~ Greg ~

I think the G1's are the best looking FALs. The STG's are second, in my book. You have got to get rid of that flash hider
