10/22 Scope Set-Up

My eyes not being what they used to be I want to put a scope on a new 10/22. I'm going to pick up a Simmons 3-9x32 AO and I'm curious about rings, mount, etc.

I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with.

1. Is the OEM scope rail/mount sufficient for this size scope, or do I need something more robust?
2. I'm going to use Weaver rings instead of tip-off. Any suggestions, re "good value for money," or "stay away from…," etc.
3. Medium height rings, assuming OEM mount? I think the diameter of the objective end of the Simmons is 44mm.
4. Best to have this installed by a 'smith or is DIY an option. I'm handy with tools and detail oriented. I assume there are lots of web links for install instructions.

Thanks.

Excellent choice of scope, I don't know of a better value for the money. Don't worry if your power ring seems to be very stiff to rotate--that seems to be common with these. The AO rings are easily adjusted, however. I have one on my CZ 452 and simply love it. Would buy another in a heartbeat.

1. I'm not sure what Ruger's shipping with the guns these days. Their older rails took a weird, proprietary tip-off ring but I think the new ones are more standard. If you don't like what comes in the box, get an inexpensive Weaver mount, which will take BOTH common tip-off rings AND Weaver rings.

2. The Simmons scope comes with tip-off rings. If your mount will take them, give them a try before spending any more money. .22 tipoff rings actually work quite well. For Weaver-type rings for .22 rifles, I usually just buy a $10 pair at Walmart. Have never had a problem with any brand of them.

3. Good rule of thumb for AO scopes is the bell is one size larger--i.e., a 32mm AO has about the same size bell as a 40mm non-AO. I think mine are in medium rings on the CZ and they're fine. Try the rings that come with it before you spend any more money.

4. Scope mounting on a drilled .22 (as all 10/22s are) is strictly a DIY affair, not a big deal at all. Degrease everything, turn right for tight, what's to know? It's a 15 minute job.

Re: 10/22 Scope Set-Up

Thanks for the quick and considered reply, Snake.

Midway has the scope in stock for $63 so I'm gonna order it. I figure it'll be plenty good enough for shooting out here in the desert southwest—plenty of light ALL the time. "Everyone" says to use Weaver mounts, but of course they never actually say why. I'll go ahead and try the tip-off rings if they look good to go with the Ruger mount. If not, I noticed Leupold makes some 1" vertical split "Rifleman" rings for about $12 bucks or so. And your comment re DIY makes sense. If the holes in the receiver are true with the barrel everything should line up just fine.

Thanks again for the feedback and saving me some money.

If you don't like the factory scope mount, let me know. I think I have an extra Weaver around here somewhere (I have an awful habit of buying something, losing it before I can use it, and then buying another one), and better yet, I might even know where it is. Make you a good deal on it.

To update this somewhat, Ruger currently ships a scope base adapter (part # NSBA for "New") that does take both Weaver style rings and tip off rings. The Weaver T-09 is probably the same thing at half the price if you have to buy separately.

Most scopes with a 40mm non-adjustable objective should be able to use Weaver medium rings. ~$10 or so as Snake notes.

Scopes with a 40 mm adjustable objective should be able to use Burris Zee medium rings (NOT Signature, shouldn't need those), giving a height above the base of 0.745 to the centerline of the rings. About $25 from Grafs.

Just an hour ago bought a 10-22 with bull barrel, scope and sling for 200 bucks.

Not sure why, I just didn't have one and instinctively knew that condition needed to be rectified.

Sounds like a good deal. I don't think you can get one at Walmart for $200 anymore.

THAT'S the kind of deal I was looking for when I stumbled over the new 10-22T. Only benefit was that I had a scope and assortment of rings laying around.
