Favorite .22 rifle?

What's yours (meaning make and model, not necessarily one individual specimen)? I'd have to say that, although I love my Ruger 10/22, and while it may actually be a slightly BETTER rifle, if I could only own one .22 long gun I'd go with the one I grew up with from the age of 12: the Marlin Model 60.

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

Sorry, I can't pin it down to just one. I own more than a dozen .22 rifles, and love them all. Some particular favorites:

10/22 "Micro-14": Great, trouble-free, rugged all-around plinker, trainer, and practice rifle. Love the fact I can load up 12 hi-cap Butler Creek mags and not have to reload for a LONG time.

DPMS M4 .22: Hella accurate and I can change from peeps to ghost ring to red dot to scope in seconds, as the mood strikes me. HATE the 10-rounds mags, and the fact I only have three of them.

Ruger 77/22V: Love the looks, the weight, the balance, the "big gun" handling. HATE the fact that it's never shot as accurately as I think it should.

CZ452 American: Love the accuracy, the only .22 I own besides an Anschutz 64 that stands a chance of shooting true 1" groups at 100 yards with cheap ammo. Nice all-around rifle, but if the 77/22V had shot this well, I wouldn't have had to buy the CZ.

ERMA EM-1: As accurate and reliable as either of my 10/22s, and looks and feels like an M1 carbine to boot. Hella fun! Only thing I don't like about it (besides the fact I only have one 15 round mag, and they're expensive) is that the trigger pull is TOO nice--a spongy but smooth 2-ish pounds, which does not feel A THING like any real M1 carbine I've ever handled.

Winchester 69A: Another great all-around old-school .22 that I'd gladly take anywhere and use for anything. Not my MOST accurate .22, but pretty darn accurate, and a joy to handle, shoot, and show off.

My first and only was a 10/22. The one I bought for my son is a CZ 452 Scout.

Same gun exactly. In fact the one I shoot most is marked Iver Johnson (I also have a pre-1970 ERMA in reserve).

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

Another favorite of mine, for sentimental reasons, is an old single shot bolt action J.C. Higgins that my grandpa used for years to put meat on the table on my family's southcentral Oklahoma farm. That and a single shot break open Victor 12 gauge were the only guns he owned. They did the job.

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

first gun I ever bought with my own money a Remington Nylon 66.

Don't shoot it much because the bolt rides in a nylon receiver and after many many shells it's kinda worn and hangs now a then.

My favorite is a Volquartsen Custom 10-22. It has been on a couple of adventures with me and Colorado prairie dogs quake with fear when it is around....

A very close second though is an old Kimber (OR) left handed bolt gun that doesn't seem to know how to miss...

I agree on the nylon 66, but my old Mossberg M44 training rifle is hard to beat.

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

Like Snake, I got lots of .22s that I like bunches. The one stand out is my Marlin M39 Mountie. If you haven't seen one, it's the carbine version of the M39.

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

Of the many I've had I only disliked one which would jam up quite ofter feeding from a 5 (I think) shot clip.
It was a Marlin bolt action Micro-groove. Model unknown. Had it for years but never shot it much.
Even shooting LR's it was the quitest .22 I ever shot.
I have three now. A pump, a semi-auto, and a lever action. No bolt actions because I'm a lefty.

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

The favorite out of my .22's would be my Henry Lever Action .22 with the Large Loop. Fun gun and has been very reliable.

I like my SU22 a lot. It is a finicky eater, though, preferring the higher-performance ammo.

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

Hard call picking just one...but at the moment that would be an Ishmash Biathlon Basic Rifle, Model 7-2-KO Basic. Either by luck or design, this thing shoots in the low 4 tenths region at 50 yards on average(5 shot groups, measured center to center, average of 10 groups). Generally my go to ammo has been Federal 711B.

Others that shoot well in the gun safe are a Model 69A, and a Remington Model 511 which shoot in the high 5's. There there is a Marlin 39M's, nice fun gun, that shoots in the 6's and 7's.

I really like the CZ 452's, the Varmint model and have considered getting one. Those things shoot in the high 3's and low 4's.

I have one of the original Browning T-2 T-Bolt, which was one of the infamous salt wood stocks...I caught it before it had rusted things up too bad and ended up Devcon bedding the action and all the other parts to isolate them from wood to metal contact. I ultimately had to strip the stock finish as the finish was checking due to the stock swelling seasonally from moisture. It has stabilized now after some 40 years. I have been of late trying to get it to shoot consistently...it tends to string vertically with the barrel free floated and I am now playing with varying tension between the fore end and barrel, which seems to be helping. Optionally, the other thing I have been pondering is just re-barreling the T-Bolt with a 21 inch light varmint tapper Lilja barrel, and match chamber.

I LOVE 22 rifles!

Re: Favorite .22 rifle?

Well .... I would have to pick my Winchester 9422. I've always had a fondness for lever-action rifles and that little Winnie is pretty nice, convenient, and has a pretty smooth action.
While it's too bad these guns are no longer in production it is sorta cool to have a gun that is now TRULY a piece of "history." Not that the particular one I have is especially valuable ... just that it isn't being made anymore ....
A close runner-up would be the Remington 550-1 I inherited from my father .... but really the Winnie is more reliable.

Ruger 10/22 for me. I've a couple others, but for shooting .22 longs at varmints around the farmette, I have my 10/22 at the ready, always handy.

I also have several, but my favorite at the moment is a Western Field (Western Auto house brand) single shot, made by Mossberg (Mossberg model 320K). It's in very good condition and it makes me feel like a kid again. At age 63, this is a good thing.
In my closet are a Henry lever, a 10/22, a Rossi pump, a Marlin 60, an old Stevens bolt, and my sweetheart - a left handed Savage bolt 22 magnum.
My latest aquisition is an old, very beat up, rusty, missing parts, Mossberg 140K that I paid $20 for.

My 10/22, bought years ago with an inexpensive Weaver variable.
It keeps on working.
Who isn't gonna blame the gun for his groups,
