The Libery Rifle - Appleseed Shoots

I was wondering if any one on this forum has set up a Ruger 10/22 as a "Liberty Rifle" for use in "Appleseed Shoots"? I am in the process of doing so; I just received my "Tech-Sights" and was wondering how your rifles have worked out.

Re: The Libery Rifle - Appleseed Shoots

Here's my now semi-famous "Micro-14." 10/22 with M14 front sight and an old Redfiled peep in the rear. All ready if an Appleseed ever gets within decent distance of me.

I've put 600 through it this weekend so far. I have six Butler Creek Steel Lips for it and it's fun to get into a nice sitting position and pop off 150 rounds at a crack. You can really get into the zen of the compressed surprise break that way.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. We will march on a road of bones.

Re: The Libery Rifle - Appleseed Shoots

I set up a very nice one for my 13 yo son to use at the Appleseed in Ramseur last Patriot's day; Tech-sights, Volquartsen trigger group. He qualified Expert with it, so it's his rifle, now.

You may want to dremel a small dimple where the set screw for the front sight contacts the barrel, and then locktite it. His drifted a bit and had to be reset and re-locktited. Amazingly, it returned to zero, but I wouldn't count on that. I did not think the adjustments on the Tech-sights matched the documentation, but once I got it sighted in, they were a big improvement over the stock sights.

Hey Snake,
I like it.
I am also starting a 10 y/o and this looks perfect.
How about a few extra pics and a "how I did it"
regards

Re: The Libery Rifle - Appleseed Shoots

Here's my Appleseed rifle. Call it a M-14/22.
It's a Ruger 10/22 in a M-14 wood stock.
Not as pretty as snakes but it works for me.
The Tech sights worked out fine.
Also a auto bolt release and extended mag release would help.
Appleseeds are a great time.
Any one going to the one in Sacramento in October?

Not much to tell. I filed a Williams front sight riser into a dovetail shape so I could bolt a GI M14 front sight onto it. Rear sight is a gun-show Redfield peep I mounted on a factory scope dovetail. The flash hider and handguard came from gun shows, cheep. The stock also came from a gun show and was painted black when I bought it. I stripped it, stained it, and finished it with spray can satin polyurethane, which has held up pretty well. USGI web sling. I've put 2600 rounds through it so far this year (going for 4000), with the only maintenance being a drop of oil on the recoil spring rod. It got no maintenance last year and was last detail-cleaned in 2007.

It's not my most accurate .22 rifle, but it has a great crisp trigger, nice sights, and is one of my favorites to shoot. I try to put 150 through it every trip to the range. Might buy a couple more Steel Lips mags this weekend and up that to 200 per.

Here's a closeup of the front sight installation.

Here is mine - still needs a few upgrades

Just bought this a few weeks ago (first rifle/gun). Planning on attending an Appleseed in September or October.
