1903 Mk 1, chambering last round from magazine, JAM!

I've got a 1903 Mk 1 (1918 sn, 1941 barrel). It works like a charm except when loading from the magazine. There, the last round will start up the feed ramp and get completely locked in between (among?) the feedramp, the ridge on the follower, and the side of the magazine. It takes thumping on the (now exposed) back part of the follower to unstick the whole mess. Here are some pictures that might help my description (which probably needs a lot of help):

Further notes: I tried another magazine spring, which behaved in all respects like the first one.

Even further note: as I was taking those pictures, I discovered that if I really slam the bolt forward with great force, it will chamber the round (but the brass will get some shallow scratches on the side).

So, is this normal? Will it sort itself out if I keep using the "excessive force" method? Do I have the wrong follower? Or is there some other problem that my deep and wide ignorance is keeping me from seeing?

Thanks, in advance!

Being that all the rounds feed fine except the one that is actually moving over the follower I would think that the follower is at fault. <JMO>

Or the magazine spring? If you have access to another '03, try replacing either the follower or magazine spring or both and se if you still have the problem.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, guys! I'll try another follower. I have tried a different spring, which made no difference. I see followers for sale for about $6, so that shouldn't be a big deal.

I'll add to this thread if I try that and it works.

M14Man,

I think that is right on. I'll try taking the stock off tomorrow. The rifle was given new wood during WWII, and I don't think it was fired since then, so a badly fitting stock would make sense. Thanks!

M14man,

That was it... a slight bump on the wood. Shaved that off, tightened the trigger housing screws, and the rifle feeds like a champ. Thanks!
