Hello, I am new to this site- from Montana. Trying to familiarize myself with how to navigate etc.. Age 63 Hunted big game all my life. Mostly a long gun guy, handloader and enjoy shooting. The reason I joined this site primarily is because I inherited a Model 94 in 32-40 that my grandfather ordered in 1926 that went thru their custom shop, it has a nickel steel octagon barrel, shell storage w/brass plate in buttstock, button magazine,Lyman Rear flip up peep sight/adjustable windage and elevation, very fine narrow front sight and has no standard buckhorn V sight on the rear-never had one. The curator in Cody,Wyoming about !5 yrs ago told me that after a records check w/serial #, all he could tell me was that yes it was ordered in 1926 and that it did go thru the custom shop however due to the fact that the records were destroyed in a fire he couldnt tell me more. My grandfather was a game warden for the State of Wyoming out of Jackson Hole at the time and served until he passed away on the job. The rifle is in good condition, shoots well and has been in my gun safe for about 30 yrs. I fired it about 25 yrs ago cleaned it, put it away and check it once a year to wipe it down with a cloth and make sure the barrel is patched with a drop of gun oil. I am trying to determine a value-not sure what the best way to go about doing it is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Auction is the only way to determine the value of a piece of history like that.
You might explore the auction sites.

Geoff
Who notes it is interesting.

I second that but I did a quick search your plain janes are running like 1000-1500 but saw one with a factory refitted 30" barrel in 1900 went for 6K+ @ RIA

tomd,

WELCOME ABOARD.

It might be well worth your time/expense to have the rifle PROFESSIONALLY appraised. - I once let an old Colt's revolver "get away from me" that I later discovered was worth $$$$$$$$$$$$.
(At that time in the 1980s, I could have bought it for 500.ooUSD.)

just my OPINION, sw

reputable appraiser

Thanks Doughboy. do you know of a way to find an appraiser up here in my neck of the woods - Montana - I tried to find one nearby years ago that was in Montana with no luck.

I once ruined the value of a Colt SAA. It had factory nickel plating that was flaking. I told Jiame Liebmann to strip it and blue it. At the time Colts were going for $20 on the border and maybe $50 in San Antonio. Times and values sure have changed. :(

That is sickening! I had a friend whose father “reblued” some 1920’s colt revolvers. After her father passed, I hooked her up with a professional appraiser. He told her untouched even in 75% condition the revolver would be worth about $20-25,000 but with it being reblued it would only be worth about $1200-1500.
