Extra material, not milled, under rear of receiver

I figured that I'd post pics of this again, since the original pics (someone elses) have long since been gone, mine should stay up for a good while. This material is has been attributed to causing "the gap" between the receiver heel and the stock.

And the difference between the 'Old', lighter and 'New', darker parkerizing:

The darker one is actually older, but has been refinished by SA Inc., after having the bolt roller recess brought into spec by customer service...the other one, regrettably, needs to have the same thing done.

Re: Extra material, not milled, under rear of receiver

The botttom right hand side ridge was part of the original M1A receiver design. Its removal was incorporated into the machining process between 1985 and 1987. At about the same time, around serial number 040000, there were some other minor changes made in the M1A receiver. I have better success with USGI fiberglass stocks fitting the M1A receivers with the bottom side ridge than the USGI wood stocks. Yes, the bottom side ridge does prevent the receiver from sitting flush with the stock at the heel in a lot of cases. YMMV

Re: Extra material, not milled, under rear of receiver

I don't see a big difference between the two, except maybe that the ridge is a bit "taller" (extending down more) on the lighter/newer receiver. Hard to tell. Or are these two examples of the same thing?

So, Different, what you're saying is that SAI started milling the ridge off between '85 and '87? THAT would require a change in the stock inletting, too, wouldn't it?

How does this correlate to the Chicom semiautos I saw so often, that had a 1/16-inch gap under their receiver heels? Purely a problem with the stock inletting?

Yes, my source regarding the removal of the bottom ridge is the former foreman at Valley Ordnance. Once that bottom ridge was removed, I would expect fewer problems with USGI stocks. As we know, SA, Inc. used Boyds' stocks for many years. AFAIK, the Boyd's stocks were made to accommodate the M1A receiver.

The Chinese receivers follow USGI geometry fairly well. Some of the USGI stocks themselves may have bee formed with extra material. Perhaps one of the stock gurus can chime in.

Yes, Grump, two of the same "generation" of rifles that I have, probably should have stated that, both happen to have "the ridge", both under 40k serial # range. "The ridge" on both is the same size, one may actually appear taller due to the color of the receiver.

Thus my "might" or whatever qualifier I used. Having been taught and played with the effects of light/dark on perceptions from both the PR* and photography sides of life, I knew that the highlights could be misleading.

If your client is more "full-figured", don't let her appear on the Tonight Show wearing white nylons!
