Staff Sergeant McClain, I have your butt plate

I picked up this M14 butt plate assembly at a gun show yesterday. The butt plate has a FM 23-71 rifle firing data card pasted on the inside of the shoulder rest plate for this M14 stock butt plate assembly. It was the firing data card for Staff Sergeant Alvin McClain. His rifle number was 118 and he was assigned to HHB 6/562. I did a Google search on this unit. It appears SSG McClain belonged to a Hawk missile battery. This unit was stationed in Germany from 1969 to 1971 or longer. His rifle zero was 15 clicks of elevation and 0 clicks of windage at 100, 200 and 300 yards. Interesting.

That is neat, but I have a question. How could his zero be the same for three different ranges? Maybe the Staff Sgt. didn't do much shooting.

It's a battle sight zero at 300 meters. His point of impact will be the same as his point of aim at 300 meters. Between 0 and 300 meters, the point of impact will be within ~ 6 " of the point of aim. This avoids having to change the elevation setting in combat.

Lee,

Here is one that I found a few years ago. I was able to find this individual thru an internet search. He is alive and well and I talked to him briefly on the phone. I offered to send him the stock for free, but sadly he declined. I was a bit disappointed, but understood. Still, pretty neat to find and talk to him. I have found several others since then and try to make a point of buying the butt plates simply for the tags.

Mike

Here is the stock:

Here is the butt plate again...I've enlarged it slightly.

Here are 3 more. Notice the middle tag. Same unit as the first shown. Rifle no. 109. I found these tags in a group of loose butt plates 2 years later.

Re: Staff Sergeant McClain, I have your butt plate

I have a butt plate that came on a Big Red stock from freds that has something similar.
Its just a small white little piece of paper with that says

EL ____14 WD_____1L

The EL and WD are printed on the paper the 14 and 1L is hand written in the blanks. Anyone know what this means? or does it mean anything.

Mike you're a hell of a nice guy to offer to give that pretty tiger stock away.

Mike, thanks for sharing those photos.

M14_Envy, it means the battle sight zero was set at fourteen clicks up from bottom for the elevation and one click to the left of center for the windage for the rifle the butt plate was attached to.

Re: Staff Sergeant McClain, I have your butt plate

You're welcome. Everytime I see one of those tags on the inside of the flapper, I feel like I have to rescue these little pieces of history. I guess I'm just too sentimental.

And, yeah...it was a nice tiger stock to be giving away, but I felt very strongly about...almost as if the stock really belonged to him and it was my duty to return it.

Different, do you think Mr. Cronin had the windage and elevation settings recorded wrong? I can't imagine his windage being 12 and elevation only 3.

Mike, my guess is that Mr. Cronin unintentionally wrote the numbers in reverse order. A battle sight zero of 12 clicks elevation and 3 clicks windage would not be unusual for a rack grade M14.

Tinbender, I'm gonna call a customer of mine, she is a product of a Geman Mother, and an American Father, her last name is Cronin, and grew up in Germany, she's the right age. She works for the VA and was an Army brat, did I mention she's quite the looker...
I'm gonna give her a call. It would be a hoot if that is her Dad. It would be very cool if the world was this small.
