bearcat6, Truly I hate to disagree BUT while OCONUS I've seen several Garands that had replacement stocks fitted that were UNMARKED, including one of my as RE-issued/rebuilt Danish Garands that came from CMP to me several years ago. RMA (for one USA arsenal) was "notorious" for NOT marking stocks, in the rush to issue rifles to the troops. yours, sw |

I stand corrected, but I believe a 1943 SA would more than likely have a cartouche. It should at least have a P proof on it.

Not to burst your bubble, but, not only was your rifle issued somewhere along its life, it's also been through at least one rebuild. The rear sight knobs on it were not around in 1943. It (the sight knobs) wasn't approved until 1945 and they really didn't start showing up until about 1947. Your rifle may be un issued SINCE REBUILD, but it isn't un issued in the sense that you're hoping for. Also, from the pictures, it looks like you have a flat-sided op rod. Also incorrect for '43 production as the flat-side didn't come into being until early '45. Just for curiosity sake, what is the barrel date? Jon Last edited by musketjon; 03-10-2015 at 12:24 PM. |

RandyBowers, musketjon, Randy, musketjon is 100% CORRECT. = After much research about 2 decades ago, I've found a TOTAL of FOUR that can be documented as "new & unfired" Garands, anywhere. 2 in military museums, one at the Smithsonian & one that "taken off the line" & was given to the Chief Engineer at SA as a retirement gift. (The Engineer's Garand is willed to the USASWM, upon the death of his daughter BUT it has been fired/hunted with.) As some EOF here know, when I was once a staff-docent at USAMPM at Ft McClellan, we looked for a NEW Garand for the WWII MP display & found NONE. - We settled for an arsenal rebuild that is just: PURTY. (Take any claims of "new & unfired" with a ton of salt.) yours, sw |

I know that at one time the CMP had TWO unissued M1 Garand's that were consecutive serial numbered, they were asking more than what my house was worth at the time.
