VIDEO: New (to me) M1 Loading Trick

This may be old news to you guys, but I've never seen it before: How to load loose rounds into an M1 using an empty clip. It's about 2 min. in.

Captain Gyro,

YEP. Me. = One of the places that I plan to hunt this season requires NO more than 5 rounds "capacity" & if you "get caught" with an 8-round clip in the rifle, you will "get a ticket" from the game warden.

yours, sw

Don't you also need a 2-rd clip for competition?

What's funny about calling his technique (which is what I use) as the 'Army' way, is that every wartime film I've seen show the clip being pushed in the fingers of the loading hand curled in a fist while the thumb pushes the clip in. :p

Dang! Another fun thing about the Garand is that you can say 'clip' without wondering if you'll get jumped!! :D

Got taught to load two rounds by putting in an empty clip and then slipping the rounds in under the lips and not pushing them down as shown in the movie, but holding them down to release the bolt and chamber the first round. This was the requirement for a rapid fire sequence where you shot the first two and then another eight round clip into the target. This all happened when I was in Parris Island in 1955. Also, we were always taught to hit the operating rod handle to insure proper seating of the bolt.

Been using the flat of my hand against the operating rod during loading since my first M1, purchased at a pawn shop in the mid 90's. But never tried loading individual rounds into an empty clip in the rifle.

Wonder if it's possible to top off, or at least add couple of rounds, to a clip that isn't fully empty? Always read (and was told) that was NOT possible, and one of the few disadvantages of the M1 compared to it's predecessors and some contemporaries like the '03-A3 and the Lee-Enfield.

And your right, Pete. It IS fun to type clip with no worries! :D

This cleared up the whole "magazine" vs. "clip" thing for me:
