Impressed with my H&R Garand

Just got back from my "range" up the hill. This was my first opportunity to fire my newest Garand, 1954 H&R.
I used a tennis ball at 100' and killed it. 6 out of 8 hits. Moved to a golf ball at 75' and got 7 out of 8.
The reason for the golf balls is I live on a course and have an endless supply.
Loads of fun watching them launch after being struck. :p

FYI: it seems the life expectancy of a golf ball is 6 hits of 30.06;)

Rifle golf is a great game. You drive with a 30.06 and put with a .22.

But what'll she do at 500 yards / 460 meters?

Geoff
Who wonders if this bloke is wed to Sling Rave Curvette? (Don't mind the green, it just SPF 300)

shep854 10-02-2013 06:03 AM

IrishCop's turning green...well, so am I and my Garand is weeping in the safe; my shooting opportunities are limited right now.

Really glad you had fun with a good rifle, tho! :D

Ratfink2u 10-02-2013 06:51 AM

I can't get that far back Geoff without standing deep in the forest out of view of my "range"....;)
Hey Bearcat, your close, I used my M1 carbine to putt with:)
Expensive golf but much more fun that using an old club for sure!

Pete, why is the Garand "house-bound"?

CaptainGyro 10-02-2013 09:23 AM

I've seen Charlie launch a golf ball from 25 yards...with a 1911.
He's got a little hook though.

Ratfink2u 10-02-2013 03:29 PM

That's good shootin right there!

shep854 10-03-2013 08:50 AM

Ya got me, Pete! Here I am stuck in my office. I did manage to fire two clips out of mine last Saturday. Ahhhhhh, sweet release!

So Rat! That's what they mean by "shooting golf"! Might have to try that on the Robert Trent Jones Golf course they have up here! ;)

Hay, Capt....I'll bet that wasn't a hook Charlie had. It was english! :D

Well that's putting a positive spin on it.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I've seen the pic of a prairie dog he launched at over a hundred... with a gubmint model.

And I have Garand envy...

WaltGraham 10-03-2013 06:50 PM

OK, since you started it.

Here.

shep854 10-03-2013 07:29 PM

The loader in the clip I posted was a 14 y/o shooting the Garand for the first time.

Shep,
Looks like somebody discovered why the brand new USAF had to settle for Carbines and ARs.
Geoff
Who admits at least one Air Force Police character with a 4" .38 could shoot. Out to 100 meters, of course it was Known Distance. C. 1975.

Not brand new, the first Zoomies were shipped-over doggies, after all. The next wave of enlistments, though...

When I was 14 I could take a Garand apart and put it back together blindfolded. Jr ROTC in high school.

Times have changed...:(
That said, I didn't get to touch a Garand until I was an adult. None available where I grew up.

bearcat6 10-04-2013 05:05 PM

Yes times have changed, We had a rifle team and a .22 range in the basement of the high school. Can you imagine that today? That was normal in those days, 1950s.
