North Store

Well I need to learn to post some pics.

I went to the North Store Sat. and came back with a Greek FG and a woodless dane. The FG went on a CMP stock a purchased a few weeks back. It has some very nice tiger stripe and the FG has the black greek finish with almost no wear on finish. The gauges showed it to be about a 3 on MW & TE. I need to do a little wood removal as the trigger gaurd will not fully close. The rifle looks like a million bucks with that finish and a very nice piece of walnut.

The woodless is a 1,180,000 serial #. Mostly SA parts with a few Itilian parts. The best part is it has a very striking lead dipped reciever, the only one I could find. No lockbars at all. George says they see very few and very few lead dipped receivers. He said they used to be fairly common but not anymore. Why is that?

In any case, I got up at 6 and drove to get there when they opened but ended up there at 9:30. Took my time looking around but did not see anything real unique. I found only 1 lightly cartouched stock on a rifle that gauged terrible.

Did meet Sniper from another forum.

On the lead dip heels, I'd think it was just coincidence they're not seeing as many.

The South store certainly has the advantage over the North store for resupply.

I love lead dipped receivers and have bought Garands on that account alone. That is when the old rack grades(pre field grade) could be found with decent bores and throats at the NS.

I have been to the NS 3 times this year and have had a difficult time finding anything that really turns my clock. I hate to start a pissing match but I really think the SS is getting the better quality stuff. At least what I've been seeing and hearing on the web sites.

I'm hopeing that the matches will bring some better pieces to the NS. Lets hope so. I'm overdue for a trip there.

They found that when firing rifle grenades that the receivers were a bit too brittle and cracking at the rear so they would dip them in molten lead to anneal the metal and soften them up so they would not crack. You can see a difference in the color because of the difference in hardness.

Here is my 1.48 mil SA.

Hey John,
Nice colors and contrast. Your 1.48M has nearly as shallow a lead dip as my 1.13M but I think I still hold the record. The other photo is an early 4 digit that belongs to a buddy. Really an awesome rifle!

Thanks,

Mine started as a woodless Dane that I scrounged wood for off of Ebay and the funshows. It has its original barrel but the TE is 5 and the MW is 5. I am still trying to decide whether to change out the barrel or not.

John.
Very nice metal finish for a woodless. The finish was very thin on all of the 5 (woodless) I have received. I think at least one is a lead-dipped but I would have to re-park to be sure.

My garand is a 2.5M and its not dipped. When did they stop. I take it they made some metallurical change to the receivers that this was no longer required.

I've managed to get 3 WW2 Garands in the past 3 months, and not one was a lead dipped. .87 mil SA, 2.44 mil Sa, and 2.38 mil Win, not a lead dipped any where.

Haze10:

I am not certain when they stopped but my 1.48 mil is one of the highest numbers I have seen that was dipped.

Orygunner:

It was reparked at some point as the chamber is no longer in the white. If it was the original finish I might be less interested in rebarreling it.

Here is a 1.729M that has been lead dipped. The lowest I have that is lead dipped is a 68XXX SA and a 144XXX WRA. Since Winchesters started at 100,001 that is equivalent to a 5 digit WRA.

I posted previously regarding 3 WW2 Garands without lead dipped. But I do have one lead dipped, and it is a 1.95 mil SA.

I just received a 1.49 SA SG and it had a lead dipped heel. I wondered what the discoloration was!
