Got this birch stock fixed up...

Finally got all the birch stock bits and found time to fix 'em up

I love birch stocks and finally am going to put a set on a garand of mine. It's going onto an IHC refurb build I'm doing.

The handguards came off e-bay, though the rear HG was stained almost walnut color. Had to strip it with acetone and then bathe it in TSP to get it back to natural birch color - it's a good match now. The buttstock was off another auction site advertised as a Walnut stock and was dirty and beat up. I steamed most of the bad dents out and it now has that "used but not abused" look to it.

I think it'll look good on the rifle once I get the barrel spun on

Nice stock. When I hear birch, I think of tiger striping. That's not always so. Some looks darn near like walnut. Nice job.

Here's a picture of my Select Grade M1 I received from CMP back when they offered Select Grades. It came with a brand new never issued Birch Stock. The stock came through with a real course finish, the kind you get when you soak new wood in Linseed Oil. I took a little BLO and 0000 steel wool and with a few light passes took the wiskering off and brought it down to a smooth feel.
The new birch is nice, but give me a pretty walnut anyday.
My buddy received a really nice IHC M1 that had some very dark stained walnut. After a little work and clean up that stock looks like it has a matched set of AA Walnut. One of the prettiest stocks I've ever seen, puts some upgrade hunting rilfes to shame.

I agree that Walnut's nice, but I already have some nice Walnut Garands, this will be my first birchey and I'm looking forward to it! Variety is the spice of life don'tcha know?

Yah, ya betcha. (You almost sound local claven2.) I almost prefer the look of the birch to walnut, it really creates a seperation between the parkerized metal and the wood.
