BIRCH OR WALNUT

I HAVE A STRIPPED STOCK AND I DON'T KNOW IF ITS BIRCH OR WALNUT. IT DOESN'T HAVE THAT REDDISH COLOR, MORE OF A LIGHT BROWN. IS THERE ANYWAY TO TELL. THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES.

Without pictures its hard to tell, but the reddish color is the product of the oils that get into the wood over the years. Unstained/oiled walnut is pretty light brown and birch has a more yellow/orange color to it. Wet a small section with a fingertip to get a better idea what it'll look like oiled.

Hardwhite,

Although the picture is a bit blurry, sure looks like walnut to me.

hardwhite,

Can't tell.... could be either but I'm leaning slightly toward walnut.

Try a better photo... less blurry, closer to the stock.... and crop out all the extraneous area to make a smaller download. You don't need more than about 60-80k to make a full screen shot.

Best regards,

if the grain runs straight, it's probably walnut

Gotta' be careful here..... I own a few birch stocks that are just as straight grained as any walnut, with not a flame or stripe to be found.

Best to all,
