Inland carbine, should I get it??

I was at a local gunsmith's place yesterday and spotted an M1 carbine that he had for sale. I asked to take a look at it. It had the push button type safety, witch I like. It comes with one 15rnd Magazine that has an AI mark on it. It has a sling and oiler, but he says the sling in not original. The trigger was a bit stiff for my liking, but crisp enough (is this something hard to fix?). The rifle looked pretty solid; it did have a small crack in the buttstock. When I looked through the sights on the rifle I noticed that the channel in the hand guard was a bit off center this is going to bug me. Other than the sling it looked pretty original witch I like. The price tag was $600. What do y'all think? I have been thinking of getting a service grade from the CMP. Should I go the CMP rout where I don't get to finger the rifle before I get it? Or get this one that is going to take a little work/$$ to get it to my liking?

Re: Inland carbine, should I get it??

I'm all for buying guns. Are you sure the channel was off center, and it wasn't that the sight was just wound way over? I have an Inland, and the sight needs to be way left to hit center. I had an Iver Johnson that was the same way. The crack in the stock can be glued up. I actually had to glue up a crack on my Inland. It doesn't take anything special to do. Sandpaper, some elmers, a vice, a wet paper towel, time, and patience. haha.

I don't happen to know offhand what CMP SG carbines are going for. The thing about the CMP is they're fair, and even sight unseen, you're going to get a quality rifle. Especially a service grade. I haven't gotten a SG carbine, but the SG M1 Rifle I got is very nice. But you're going to wait for it. I think the wait is like 3-4 months. And you won't get a sling, oiler or mag with the CMP gun.

It's not uncommon for the channel to be off-center.
