National Postal Meter (NPM) carbine questions

I picked up a National Postal Meter carbine at a gunshow today. The barrel is an underwood dated 8-43. I also got some extra mags, tools, repro case, 300 rounds of American Eagle ammo, and 100 rounds of old Lake City ammo (pictured). Is that Lake City ammo anything special? Also, the stock is different from most I have seen. It has an "I" shape in the rear where the sling slips past the oiler. I cannot find any markings on the stock to identify it. Is that unusual? Also, the carbine serial number is in the 1540000 range. When was it made?

Markings will be in the sling bevel on the left side of the stock. Look very closely. Winchester stocks can have a very tiny nearly invisible W there and Saginaw stocks are roughly milled and the letters/numbers can practiacally disappear in the rough milling.

All I can see is a "10" in the sling bevel (or is that an IO? ).

" I O" for "Inland Operations," if memory serves. My carbine has that as well and I also once thought it was a "10."

What about that ammo? Is that WW2 vintage? Is it worth anything?

Military ammo would be stamped with the last two digits of the year on the base around the rim. Lake City will be marked as "L C A 45" for 1945, for example.
Someone else will have to chime in on worth. I have some WW2 surplus ammo my father brought back from the Korean War. I don't really consider it particularly valuabe, althoiugh I won't shoot it because I have plenty of modern commercial ammo and can get more.

I really would hate to open the ammo boxes since they are still sealed (glued shut).

Re: National Postal Meter (NPM) carbine questions

It is IO for Overton for Inland. And some of the WWII ammo only has a single digit such as a 4 or 5 to indicate the year.

That's what's nice about these fora. We can all learn something. I've learned plenty over the years.
