30 rounders

Iím sure this subject gets batted around a bit. Iím interested in some 30 round magazines. I have oodles of 15 rounders and I have two GI 30 rounders (one hardback and one splitback). I know that the majority of ďGIĒ 30 rounders out there are actually commercial magazines, but Iím wondering if there are any that are worth a crap? Real GI 30 Rounders are getting hard to find and theyíre not cheap at all. Iím looking for shooter magazines, not collectors magazines.

Any good advice on the 30ís?

Re: 30 rounders

The only problem I have had with 30 rounders was before I put the M-2 catch on. The weight of the mag caused the mag catch to gouge the two "nibs" on the back of the mag to the point where the magazine was ruined. It happened quite quickly too!
I have been happy with all the other magazines I've acquired.
My carbine seems to despise soft-nose ammo, but loves ball ammo no matter what magazine introduces it.
I have heard some commercial mags weren't properly treated and were too soft where those two catches are, which might have been part of the problem.
Personnally I have not had any other problems with 30 rounders. I do not shoot full auto (mine is an M-1, not M-2) and I have theorized that semi auto might be more forgiving than full auto.
The M-2 with 30 rounder mags were only really used extensively in Korea, and maybe early in Vietnam. Even the military mags gave problems, and I have read that soldiers so equiped would sometimes get rid of the 30s and acquire fifteen round mags. One soldier I read about went a bit farther; he found two close trees, inserted M-2 carbine barrel, bent it into a U shape, and threw it in a nearby lake, and requisitioned a Thompson.

The best advice I can come up with off hand is if you can choose, get ones with thicker metal bodies; they have a better reputation than the thin skin stuff.

Oh, and DO get the M-2 catch if you don't already have it. Yup, it does help.

Re: 30 rounders

I have the M2 magazine catch and my two GI 30 rounders work very well. I'd love to find some other 30 rounders that work as well. Still, I have lots of 15 rounders, so I can afford to experiment a little on the 30 rounders. I've used one commercial 30 rounder and it was junk. The follower would go about 1/3 of the way down and then get stuck (at the bend). I see that Wolf makes magazine springs for 30 rounders now, I'll bet that helps things out. It's also reassuring to see since my 30 rouners are very old magazines.

Re: 30 rounders

I have every 30 round magazine made on ordnance contracts. I shoot only the SEY, J and AI marked due to rarity of others. I have been using them for 35 years and have never had problems when using US GI ammo. The only problems I did have were with commercial ammunition.

Re: 30 rounders

I only use "SEY" and "AYP" marked 30 rounder's, and they all work fine in my non-M2 catch carbine.

Watch out for AYP marked mags. They are faking them now.

Re: 30 rounders

And SEY as well.

What I was most wondering; are there any current production commercial 30 rounders that are worth a crap?

Re: 30 rounders

Has anyone used the "Korean Military" 30 rounders that CDNN is selling?

Re: 30 rounders

Yes, I purchased one locally. It should be the same you have - plain brown paper wrapper with a fake NSN stock number on it. Anyway, I found it very functional and works fine. I was actually planning to stock up on them, but I didn't want to buy 30 rd mags that I can not try out. I can't find reasonably priced ammo and I don't want to cut into my reserves just to try out new mags that I don't have to have right now. Hope these mags are as plentiful and cheap when the ammo supplies recover from the horders....

Re: 30 rounders

Don't worry about availability. They were not military production, but were commercially produced recently by Red Cloud, in Virginia.
