Front sight removal
I have a USGI carbine that needs to have the front sight replaced...I have read that the pin drifts left to right and that a special tool is needed...I don;t have the tool and am wondering if it is advisable to remove the old sight with standard tools?

I have never needed the tool. Just drift out the pin with a punch and hammer. Then with a block of hardwood (to not mar finish on barrel), tap it off. Then pull the key out with needle nose pliers.
remember, don't hit it hard...it should tap off easy. If not, soak it overnight in some penetrating oil and try again.
If that doesn't work and it seems like you have to hit it hard, get the tools.
BTW, remember tap, not hammer.
when you reverse the procedure, make sure the key is lined up correctly and the pin should go in real easy. If not, it is not aligned.

I usually lay the front sight on its side on a block of moderately soft wood before trying to drive out the pin. Since most are staked in place they can sometimes be pretty stubborn. That way you can hit the drift fairly hard and you don't have to worry about the sight.
