Install of Hammer Spring on Inland

Guys,

Just bought my first M1 Carbine, an Inland made in early '42, and have field stripped and cleaned. I also oredered a Wolff Springs rebuild kit for it and pulled all the springs and replaced with the new ones since it was having a slight feeding issue.

Now that I have pulled the hammer spring I am having trouble getting it back in place with either the new one or the old one. Is there some trick in doing this? I just can't get it compressed enough to slide it in place. Let me know if there is a easier way then trying to compress by hand. Or let me know if I am just a FNG that doesn't know what he is doing!

Thanks,

Jared

Yes, there is a trick. put the plunger into the spring. With the hammer forward, align the spring with the recess in the back of the housing keeping the plunger on the LEFT side of the hammer. There is a cutout area in the hammer on that side. Use the recoil spring guide rod to push back on the plunger. The tip fits very nicely into the hole in the plunger. You only need to get the end of the guide into the hole. Grip the guide close to the plunger and push it back. Once it is clear of the rear of the hammer, simply move the plunger to the right a small amount to settle it into the recess in the back of the hammer.

You can use a hammer spring tool if you can find one, they make it easy and keep the spring from hitting you in the head.

Thanks for the info on that. I finally got it in. That recoil guide rod makes a handy tool for field stripping this weapon.

Thanks again,

Jared
