an interesting variation

and it actually looks legit! A M3 knife that was post war converted to a M4 bayonet AND had rubber grips put on.

HG, while it is a bit unusual, I don't think it indicates anything but a rebuild. Since during the transition from M3s to M4s, many of those were made, it is only to be expected that at least a few would have had rotted leather replaced with rubber.

I agree with Jimb on the bayonet, I think the scabbard is a post Korean war unit and can be purchased for under $20.00.

Larry Ruth speaks of these as being a rare model of a second refurbishing, with the M3 blade. They were refurbished between the wooden handle type, and the aluminum handle type, before the plastic grips came into use. All are considered conversions from the regular leather handle M4, so for a collector of bayonets, I guess these would be a good addition to a collection. Bill Ricca and I have had a couple of conversations about them, but neither of us has seen enough of them to have an opinion. Larry's info sounds reasonable (War Baby II, page 609). :D The scabbard seems to be a common as dirt M8A1.

The old Sherwood International, Sarco, and Numrich Arms had a few of these floating around back in the 1970's, for $20.00. As far as collectiability back then...we never paid much attention to them? I don't think there is that much rarity with then today, (maybe one of each in a M3-M4 collection)...but....I believe many M3's and M4's were converted with rubber handles, by arsenals and possibly... field depots. More than likely..they are much like the full- stock leg holsters being "experimental", IMHO?

at least that rubber handle looks like it's old and used unlike that one you posted last week wayne.
