Corrosive ammo?

Would ammo with a headstamp of WCC 52 be corrosive?

Thanks,
Tim

I actually shot several hundred rounds of the LC52 back in the '90s when it sold at shows for $8/50. I never saw any corrosion on my carbine, but then again, I'm one of those that cleans/oils after every firing session. I'm sure it was the Chinese ammo, not real Lake City.

From my understanding, corrosive ammo is only a problem if you do not clean as often as you say. I know on the SMLE forums, they shoot corrosive and clean with boiling hot water straight from a kettle. I don't think I would like to clean my rifle with water, but it obviously works fine.

I thought WCC was Western Cartridge Company. Were they bought by Winchester? In any case, AFAIK no American company has made corrosive ammo. I know some country did -- but dang it, I can't remember right know.

Thanks, guys,

Didn't think it was, but couldn't remember when US switched to non-corrosive and a 52 date seemed kinda close.

The US never produced corrosive carbine ammo. You are thinking of .30-06 ammo with the mid fifties date switchover. The chinese produced some corrosive that was marked LC52. The french also produced corrosive ammo. Bu t take note, the french ammo is of shorter case length than the standard carbine ammo. Its one of their quirks about not having standard military calibers allowed in the country. Since the carbine case is tapered, their ammo will fire in our carbines, but you need to be careful of headspace considerations.

WCC is Western Cartridge Company. Western was owned by Olin Chemical and it was they (Western CC) that bought Winchester, not the other way around. Like many things in life, it is the "people" who make the "consumables"----the software if you will----that make the money, not the people who make the "hardware". A good modern day example is ExxonMobil vs. General Motors.

Thanks for the clarification. Who owns what or whom these days is getting to be a tangled web, and "following the money" tends to only make one dizzy!
