i've been searching far and wide for a mag pouch that fits over the butt. all i can find are the ones with belt loops. can anyone point me in the right direction for a "butt" mag pouch? thanks

If a repro is okay, The Sportsmans Guide has them, along with numerous other venders. They're also found on ebay. A real one is not that expensive, about $15 for a very good one. Be advised you have to take the action out of the stock to put the pouch on, and the inside snap will scratch the stock. These pouches were just the early form of belt pouch and were not intended to be put on the stock, although the practice was widespread.

I just put a piece of duct tape over the snap on mine.

I don't think so. They were originally intended to go on a belt and snap in place to hold them in position. I have a couple of originals, and I did buy a repro recently and all have these snaps.
As someone suggested, duct tape might help.
The stock on my carbine has a few minor dings as it is so I don't worry about it. If I had a brand spanking new pristine pretty stock it would bother me.

The snap is the same size as most used today. Find the other half that it snaps into on someting that does not need it. The thing that holds sport bag handles together is a good example. Cut it off off whatever it is on and put it over the snap on the stock pouch. This will give you a nice wide smooth surface against your stock that will minimize any damage. If you look hard enough you can probably find some made out of a synthetic material instead of metal. If you so desire you can still put duct or foam tape over them and reasonably expect it to stick.
