I have a pouch for two mags, marked "Pocket, Cart., Cal. .30 M1 Carbine," then something I can't decipher. It's dark olive drab, and looks like a typical post-war twin mag pouch (belt). EXCEPT, it was cut apart and a section of more or less matching canvas sewn in to extend it so it would accomodate two 30 rd mags. In other words, the flap was extended approximately 5". Looks like it was done in a hurry, too (fairly sloppy sewing, a few loose threads). I figure it was done for Korea, or perhaps to send to the RVN. Anybody seen one of these?
Sure, they are somewhat common, and were a stop-gap measure used until new ones were made. Probably says something like: FSN 3465 261 6922, which is the Federal Stock Number, and has a six-inch piece of canvas sewn on to extend a 15 rounder to hold 30 rounders. Some even have year, I have seen 1951 on a few.
Thanks! I think I'll put it on the table today and see what I can get for it. Made enough yesterday selling off old ammo, extra magazines, and old belts, holsters, harnesses, etc. to pick up a new Springfield Armory 'WWII G.I.' .45. Came home and dug up another truckload of 'stuff' to take today. It's fun to do shows when you have a buddy that always gets a table and only uses half of it. Plus, I'm in the mode of thinning out my junk. I think it's pretty efficient to take a Jeep-full of stuff down there and swap it out for one gun!
The actual USGI 'Rigger Made' pouches are quite collectible and typically 'go' for a good $$ figure. Fortunately or unfortunately---as the case may be---back in the 60's when it was near impossible to find the carrying cases for 30 round mags, SARCO (or Northridge?) had a "boat-load" of 15's converted to 30's and those are the ones most typically seen up for sale.
That's probably what I had - the work was kind of shoddy. The buyer didn't care - just wanted a way to carry two 30s. I had a fair day, and I never did buy that Springfield; I actually resisted temptation for once!
These pouches came in from Korea. I know of nobody who can document them as being US. I have had pouches as late as 1956 dates that have been altered, long after the adoption of the 30 round mag pouch.
The Federal Stock Number is the FSN for the 15 round pouch, not the alteration.
I don't know. That would be buried in Navy files, because it was a Marine Corp item of issue.
