| Wooden stocks for N-frame S&W
I'm looking to acquire a S&W Model 22 in 1917 configuration. I know it's marketed as pure nostalgia for retro fans, but I hope to do a lot of fun shooting with it. The original grips may or may not work with my hands (Med/L with long fingers). I really like the wood stocks on the S&W Model 57 Mountain Gun. Does anyone know if these grips are available to the public, or are they manufactured exclusively for Smith and Wesson?

Most of the wood grips S&W has used lately are from Kim Ahrends just Google "Ahrends Grips" |

Smith & Wesson will sell you any of the grips they are currently using, including those from their Classic line. I recently purchased a gorgeous set of rosewood service grips, with diamonds in the checkering pattern and brass medallions that go beautifully with the polished bronze Tyler-T grip I am using on an older pre-Model 27. Just be careful to specify exactly what you want - I was initially sent target grips when was trying to purchase service grips. (The target grips were of the same description and were also so beautiful that I hesitated to return them.) S&W Customer Service: 800-331-0852 |

Hey, I ordered a set of grips from Ahrends Grips, Clarion, IA. They are the retro-combat N-frame square butt style with finger grooves and recessed left side to allow for ease of loading. Got them Wednesday. WOW!!! I went whole hog and had them treat the stocks with tung oil, and the Moradillo wood grain is wonderful and distinctive. The texture is velvety smooth, which might not appeal to everyone, but the sculpted finger grooves allow a very solid hold onto what are the most comfortable grips I've ever owned for an N-frame S&W. What is also amazing is the machinery that allows the grips to fit so well without the benefit of accessing the particular firearm. All that was necessary was driving out the pin that holds the lanyard ring assembly - clamp the two halves onto and over the frame - tighten the screw sufficiently (they warn about overtightening, as it will damage the grips) - and, viola! If I'd have jumped aboard the Time Machine and had this revolver, .45 full moon clips and these grips back in 1974-76 and '77-'78, when I was a police officer, I'd have been in Fat City! Now, I'm really spoiled and will have to get a flap holster! ![]() |
