SA M1A and scope mounts...

Well, I might be at the end of my scope/M1A nightmare. Got an email today from SA, saying that they were aware of a prob with the grooves and were getting new receivers made up. I called the guy at SA who the info came from via the customer service dept, and he said that wasn't right; the vertical groove is mil spec, but the horizontal, well there aren't any specs, they just have to fit the SA scope mounts. Then he told me there weren't any blueprints for the M1A/M14 out there, and there were no required spec for that part. I then asked him why on the high end SA M1A's, the groove is wide and deep, and on the others, it isn't, and how to get a receiver that will fit a mil spec scope mount. I got the usual run around. They are going to buy the Sadlak mount that their receiver messed up the screw (stripped the threads right off) from me, and I don't know if they will buy back my rifle, the lady who does that is out for a few days. Basically, the left side horizontal grooves, they decided to change from the mil spec so that their mounts would fit, and if a mil spec scope mount doesn't fit, they dont care. What a crock.

Do any scope mounts actually fit the SA m1A receivers with the narrow/shallow grooves that will last???? Brookfield, Sadlak and Smith Ent. all don't fit because they are made for GI spec receivers, not the garbage that SA puts out now.

My Sadlak steel mount went on crooked, too.

It's going back to see if it can be adjusted. I fear the worst - out of spec hole in the receiver for mounting.

Steve, check the grooves as well, should be .149" wide at the top, mine are between .120 and .130, so the key on the mount doesn't fit in properly and the screw hole/threads may be off as well. Also the depth is different than GI depth, so it doesn't fit against the receiver flat, and when you tighten it, it leans to the right a little. These mounts do work very nicely on GI spec receivers, though! I think I'm going to have my receiver milled to the right dimensions.

i dont think anything works good on the new SA receivers except the SA mounts but i wouldnt want one of those so i bought an ARMS 18 mount and that didnt work either so i sent it to ARMS to see what they can do and they said that the SA receivers arent gi spec and it wouldnt fit so they told me that they would work on it and fit it to a new SA receiver for me and send it back. now it fits fine on my SA.

When did SA change their dimensions? Has it been recently?

i dont know when probably since they came out with this third gen scope mount. that way others wouldnt fit and theirs would be the only ones to fit.

I have 2 SA's, and neither an ARMS or a Smith will fit them. The ARMS and the Smith both fit my Armscorp receivers great though.

Anyone know what serial numbers are to spec and which are not? Or which mounts fit well on which s/ns? This would seem to be valuable information to track, and to send off to Different for his archives.

I'm not sure of the serial # range. The first receiver I had was 160XXX, and the 2nd was 165XXX. I have heard 141XXX was ok, but I am not sure when it went bad. I saw some in the 152XXX range that looked ok.

I tried the Sadlak on 3 different older M14/M1A receivers, 1 GI M14 welded sel switch, and 2 older SA's, and the mount lined up and went on nicely on all of them, but I haven't seen a new SA receiver that will take the mount.

I finally have an ending to my tale of frusturation from SA, they said they could remachine the receiver or mount to have it fit properly. When I asked how long it would be, they said 6 weeks. At that point, I asked for my money back, and they agreed. They said I just needed to fax the invoice over to them so they know how much to write the check out for. I need to get ready for hunting season, and can't afford to be w/o a rifle for another 6 weeks, so I went out and picked up a Howa 1500 JRS classic bolt action in .308 and got Leupold rings and bases for it for around $500. Shoots nicely, when I remember to work the bolt , but the M1A was definetly softer in the recoil area. I was getting 3 shot groups 1.5" for Fed loaded Nosler Partitions 180 gr, and a 4 shot group of around 5/8" with Remington Scirroco's. If I held the crosshairs steady enough, the rifle shot right where I wanted it to, but the screws were loosening up, so it was sometimes a little off. I miss my M1A already, and will be shopping for parts and have it built up prob early spring next year.
