Thanks to all...

Just thought I'd say thanks.. I restored my mother's toy chest that my grandfather built for her in 1936 or so for her Christmas present. It drifted into a dark corner of her garage years ago after getting a sloppy coat of blue paint 30 or 40 years back. She had almost forgotten about it when my sister and I "found" it. I took it home and did some serious research here for stripping and refinishing.

Grandpa made it out of scrap 1 x 6 pine tongue-and-groove flooring and the wood was sound. No rot or mold, no dry rot or loose boards. I stripped the box of the horrible blue paint (20W x 24H x 32L) with oven cleaner, washed it with Simple Green and water. Reset any high nail heads with my hammer and punch. Sanded it to 120 grit on the sides and 220 grit on top. Took the old hinges off and stripped the rust off with a chore boy and a copper wire brush.

While I wanted to put an oil finish on the toy box, time and work didn't allow me to do so. I used a rub on ployurathane (satin - three coats) and Johnson's floor wax to finish up.

Mom put it next to her chair (she's 74 and sits a lot) and likes to rest her hand on the top while she watches TV or reads. To say she was thrilled is an understatement.

So, again, thanks to all who've shared. I knew what to do and what not to do.

Merry Christmas..........

Me <- Too stupid to use a digital and too broke to buy one...

Seriously, if i get a chance, I'll get some. The before ones are not possible as it wasn't until a month ago that my sis figured out how to juggle the furniture in the house to fit the chest. I was in a bit of a rush.
