How to refinish a k98 mauser?

I just got a RC mauser made at Obendorf in 1939 with all wermacht and nazi markings intact. Stock, receiver, barrel, and bolt numbers all match! The only problem is the stupid red crap the Russians have slathered all over this early model stock. I would like to restore the stock as close as possible to it's original finish, but have never messed with refinishing before. How should I strip it and how should I refinish the wood ? Thanks in advance for your help!

Denatured alcohol removes shellac and nothing else.

Never use oven cleaner (Lye) it will delaminate and possibly change the color of the original glue and wood. If you are tempted to use oven cleaner, count to ten, and start with a a soft cloth and Acetone. Wipe quickly and vigorously and do not soak the wood.

Once a clean matte finish is restored wait two days and use Behr Tung Oil Finish according to instructions and it will look fine.
