| What to make of this?
I spent this past weekend participating in a written police entrance exam. One portion was about personal history and there were several questions concerning weapons. How many handguns do you own? 2 Have you ever in your vehicle or on your person carried a weapon for self-defense? Yes Do you have a license to carry a concealed weapon? Yes When they get down to scrutinizing the answers, what will likely be made of this? I figure it's not unusual for a bunch of twenty somethings who want to be police to own handguns and carry them, but is there some character analysis that goes into this? Will a background investigator likely ask about these questions? |

At some departments, the idea of hiring officers who show evidence of liking guns is frightening. This of course means that they will be mindless slaughter machines, out on the street. (Not.) At others, it might be taken as "Good, this person is already comfortable with the responsibility that goes with carrying a gun." G'luck! |

My semi-educated guess is that: 1- They want to see if you're comfortable around firearms. 2- You're a law abiding citizen (CCW permit holder). I wouldn't sweat it. As long as you're telling the truth which would be easy to confirm on CCW. Lies have a way of surfacing. ![]() |

The administrators [I almost typed "leaders"] of most LE agencies have little interest in shooting and are uncomfortable with firearms, except when talking about how dangerous they are. If I were seeking a job in law enforcement, I would be truthful, but downplay my interest in firearms. And for goodness sake, don't bring up the subject during your interviews.

Like JTWnTN said, don't play it up during your interviews. "I wanta carry a gun and drive fast!" is not a good thing to say. The background investigator may ask your friends if they had ever seen you handle your weapons, and did you do so in a responsible manner, or something like that. I think their just asking the question to see how familiar you are with firearms. In our society today, not many are brought up hunting and the like anymore. Most recruits have only seen the way to handle a gun on movies like 'Dirty Harry'. (Which wasn't bad.... ) Good luck.

| All the responses are good information. By all means, avoid appearing to be a "gun nut." It should go well. ---------------------------------- You own ONLY two handguns??? ![]() |
