Sheriff accused in domestic case hours after filing for divorce
The Potter County sheriff is accused of shoving his wife of 18 years while trying to get inside their house just two hours after he filed for divorce.

Beverly Joan Shumate was reportedly changing locks on the couple's home Wednesday morning when her estranged husband arrived, said Amarillo police Sgt. Randy TenBrink. Michael Shumate then allegedly grabbed and shoved her, TenBrink said.

Michael Shumate, Potter County's sheriff since 2001, had filed for divorce citing "discord or conflict" shortly before he arrived at the couple's home, court records show. A judge had also approved a temporary restraining order for Michael Shumate against his wife, according to court records.

I spy with my little eye… a Lautenberg consequence.

Well, to be fair, a former sheriff of Adams County, IN was often spotted by yours truly wearing his uniform sans gunbelt. I suppose he could have been concealing something but I fail to see the point when he could just wear his duty weapon.

One of my first Sgts, was a true Andy of Mayberry type. Every morning he would come to work in uniform, and not have a gun on. He was the only one who got to use the HT(handi talkee). Of course, we worked a Sub Station, 2 hours from the main office, so bascially he got away with anything he wanted to do.
