Russian PPS-43

Hello everyone:

Wondering where I could get more info on the Russian WWII SMG the PPS-43. I am interested in eventually getting into a class III firearm. Would love a Thompson, but cannot afford one. Have heard a little about the pps-43 in WWII and would like to know more. How would I go about getting one? How much would it cost? Reliability, and accuracy? I like the 7.62 x 25 round, but if it is not feasible to go this route, I have also heard good things about the S&W 76/MK 760.

Thank you,

M1newbie

I believe that about half a million were made. Most if not all were probably exported. They were used in Korea, Vietnam, Rhodesia, and Grenada, so it's possible that you might be able to find one. It's a full auto only subgun, btw.

p.s., Does anyone know of any other countries that used them, including insurgent movements?

Newbie...I'm not familiar with the PPS43, but if its like other Russian firearms, they probably upgraded the PPS41 in 1943. Security Arms website doesn't have a 43 listed. This indicates your finding one transferable is between zilch and niet! I handled a transferable PPSh 41 a couple months ago. The owner had it for years and no intention of selling. You are better off going with either a S&W 76 (as a C&R collectable) or a MK760 to shoot. I have a 760 and love it. No problems once you fit the mags to the gun. And DON'T hold the magazine when you shoot. Let it swing and find its way. Happy Master Card!

Actually, the PPS-43 was a VERY different design from the PPSh. It was designed by Sudayev, not Shpagin.

Amnesty Registered PPS43 Russian

I know this is old post. I am new to sight. I have a Amnesty registered PPS43 Russian submachinegun. I can testify that it is a very controllable easy to use gun. Looks pretty cool too. Parts are REAL CHEAP if you break anything. Main obstacle would to find one to buy. I think there are only two C&R registered in the country.

If you want a full auto on the cheap, consider the STEN; that's one fantastic SMG.

The PPSH is a very good SMG also. To learn more pick up a copy of The World's Submachine Guns, Vol. 1: Developments from 1915-1963, by Thomas B. Nelson

There are very few errors in that book and it's very good information.

I spent a few years working for a Class 3 small arms importer as a gunsmith, so I've worked on all of the SMG's pretty much. The PPSH series is very good, and the 7.62x25 is a great round. Parts are readily available and cheap (not that you're going to need them really).

Some other very good but less known SMG's that generally go cheap when you find them...
