M16 Attachment Question

What is the flat rectangular device that our soldiers/Marines have attached to the front, top of their M16's handguards (forward of the optic, just behind the front sight base)?

It is either an AN/PEQ-2 ITPIAL (Infrared Target Pointer / Illuminator / Aiming Light) or an AN/PAQ-4 IAL (Infrared Aiming Light), in other words, an infrared laser.

You mean it is a "red dot" laser sighting system (put the dot on the target and shoot)?

Essentially, but the "red dot", as you put it, is infrared and not visible to the naked eye. It's used for aiming and firing weapons at night while the user is wearing NVGs (Night Vision Goggles) like the AN/PVS-7. It's also used for infrared illumination.

Phil_EFMB,
Oh. That makes more sense. So it's (part of) a night sighting device. Thanks.

In other words, it's a rifle-mounted version of the old laser designator used to "paint" a target for aircraft or big guns to hit, right?

Carbinedude, the AN/PEQ-2 is not designed for that type of target designation/munitions guidance. Its purpose is to allow soldiers wearing NVGs to illuminate and engage targets with their individual weapons. One side emits a IR aiming laser. The other side has what is basically an IR flashlight that allows for wider illumination of an area or target.

Actually they are a newer updated version called the PAQ-4 they still are essentially the same thing just in a smaller less bulky package.
