Actully from what I hear most Korean dose smell as dose most surplus. But I could be wrong, I'm sure a more knowledgeable person will be along soon to answer you're question.
often ammo smells of ammonia. i haven't shot korean cause i've got a good pile of US. i've notice that military powders have this smell most often. so maybe the flash retardant in the powder.
but you guys are correct it is always a good smell. smells like freedom.
when powder deterates, it gets weaker not stronger. The problems you have been hearing about come from weak brass in SOME lots of korean. I'm sure that LC had problem lots over the years also.
Hey Justa,
Some gunpowders just stink. Personally love the smell of 2400, H-4227, Red Dot. Worst smelling stuff has to be Win. 760 fired inside of a row of tires to cut down the noise @ one range I used to go to. Pyrodex smells like dirty sweat-sox to me.
Personally, I love the smell of the Korean stuff. The older shooters on our team really got wood when I switched to Korean. They said
"Oh yeah, thats the good stuff!". In my M-1, the Korean ammo shoots better than the supposedly superior Danish stuff!!! When the older fellows were getting excited about the great smell of the Korean ammo, one of the younger shooters commented that they must be "powder junkies" or something!
It was probaly buried in the back yard with the Kimshe Pot. Thats why is smells like rotten cabbage!!!! YUM YUM!!! I am having flash backs!!! I probaly contracted some intestinal disease from the crap I ate while in country, but boy could they fix up your dog.
Korean KA smells outstanding, and it sticks on your clothes all day so you get to smell it until you shower  A lot of higher end .22 ammo stinks bad though Im told its the eley priming.
Ah. If by "journalistic" you mean "incorrect," I get it. Kind of the same way journalists refer to any paved surface at an airport including concrete hangar floors as "tarmac."
Try some Greek Olympic 8mm in the white and gold lettered 20-round boxes. Talk about your pull-my-finger-rotten-eggs-who-cut-the-cheese odors! Whew.... bad news.
