.40 Cal. Carry Ammo

New .40 guy. Does anyone out there have a recommended factory load for civilian carry for a .40. Thanks.

Are you talking about reloading your own carry ammo? Or Factory, buy from store ammo?

Factory would be the Federal Hydrashock HPs. This is what the Police carry down here, or that's what they used at the shooting range where I picked up a Coffee can full and also found a few live rounds too.

Now for reloads, I wouldn'y even think about using my reloads for carry. If you ever had to use it on a scumbag, a con artist lawyer will take that and twist it back onto you and make it sound like an "Accidental" firing. (No offence to the Lawyers on this sight, you guys know there are bad lots of them out there too.)

Enjoy!

I've used Speer Gold Dot 165 grain(probably the most common carry ammo), Remington Golden Saber 180 grain(most accurate for me), and Remington Express 155 grain(fairly hot).

Thanks for your replies on the .40 factory (store bought) ammo. I carry the Federal Hydroshocks in my .45's. Maybe I'll try their .40 load as well. Regards.

I think any of the premium ammo from the major companies(Speer, Federal, Remington, and Winchester) would do well, although some guns are picky about ammo. I really like the Federal 124 grain HST and 115 grain Hi-Shok in 9mm. Some people on tight budgets even carry the non-premium WWB and Rem UMC JHP. I have fired at least 600 rounds of the Rem UMC JHP(available at Wal-Marts in this area in 100 round value packs) in 9mm and .40 S&W- somewhat dirty, flashy, but feeds reliably. I would recommend that you shoot at least 150-200 rounds of your carry ammo prior to relying on it.

I'd go with what your local Pd carries. Go with the least "fancy - shmancy" 180 grain JHP you can find. Something really non descript and PLAIN, no "HOT SHOT / SUPER - DUPER" ammo. Omega is correct concerning CERTAIN shark attorneys with their B.S. games ! As good as Gold Dot , Gold Sabre and even Hydra- Shok are, I've read MANY articles that reveal that, (the you know whos) have effectively used the trademark names of ammunition to set a false image of perfectly law abiding people justly protecting their property and their loved ones .
Massad Ayoob is an excellent author and certainly a been there done that professional. I would highly suggest anyone who seeks to carry read his books and articles.

+ 1 on the Plain 'ol YELLOW BOX UMC JHP 180 grain.

Even better point. I wasn't thinking that far. Also I would be carrying Winchester 147 gr JHP for my 9mm because I couldn't afford both the gun and the Hydra-Shok. It's one or the other!

If you can't decide, take a pumpkin out to the shooting range and shoot it with your White or Yellow boxed ammo of choice. You will get plesent, spin chilling results.

Enjoy!

I use 165gr Gold Dots in my Glock 22. They produce noticably more noise and recoil than 180gr UMC FMJs (in my opinion). So for stopping bad guys, I guess that's a good thing.
