Federal .308 GMM 168gr factory duplication loads

Anybody have a tried and true load that shoots to the same point of impact with as good or better accuracy from your rifle? My rifle loves the GMM 168gr but at $1 a round practice is expensive. I would like to duplicate the performance of GMM with my loads. Thanks in advance, TJR

I'm assuming that this is going to be for that nice M1A that you just got. A fellow forum member, djl4570, has a VERY good load that I "borrowed" from him. It is 44.4 grains of Varget with a 168 SMK. Out of my Supermatch this load is sub-MOA with iron sights. This is the load that I shoot in matches now. It's a great load. Simp

Simp: In subsequent testing I've observed comparable accuracy at 45.0g in the bolt guns. At 45.3g of varget I saw the groups open up and at 45.5g of Varget I began to see what I thought were bolt face impressions in some of the spent cases along with an even larget group. The manuals go all the way to 46.0g but I have not persued this. The advantage to the stiffer load is that it should shoot somewhat flatter at longer ranges so it might be an opportunity for a 600 yard slow fire load, perhaps with a 175g VLD bullet seated so far out that you can only put one in the magazine. The load of 44.4g is still my benchmark though. It duplicates the GMM point of impact and shoots consistantly well in all the commercial brass I've loaded, with both Nosler and Sierra match bullets, in hot or cold weather and in five different rifles I've tried it in. The RSO at my range calls it a boring load, just does the same thing all day long.

Plus 1 for that! Simp

GMM is s duplicate of the military M852 load.
168 sierra, 41.5grs IMR4895, surplus brass, 2.82" OAL. I've found the Nosler bullet to be cheaper, and it shoots equally as well in my rifle.

Basically, if you push a 168gr HPBT at 2650fps using 4895, 4064, Varget, VV N140, etc, you're rifle should agree nicely with it.

This may have been true at one time. With Federal now owned by ATK it seems unlikely that they're using IMR (now owned by Hodgdon) powders. It seems likely they're using a custom formulation similar to Reloader 15.

I shoot Federal Gold Medal Match ammo in the 168 grain and I have a load of my own that matches it pretty well. I use 43.0 grains of Varget with the Siera 168-grain HPBT. I use Federal match brass and the Federal 210M primers. The target on the left was shot with this load and the one on the right was with 42.0 grains of IMR 4895. I shoot these loads in my SA NM M1A. use what you want but I know what works for me.
