I just got some .243 win for an old Rem. 700, and I did a test to see if the round would fit in my m1a. AND IT DID!!  so when I go to the range on saturday I will not have the ammo for the to guns on the table at the same time.
just so I know what would happen if I was to shoot a .243 win out of my M1A?
no, but I can tell you what happens when you shoot 308 out of a 30-06 - sounds a little funny, and it shoots a little funny, the cases look bizarre, but that's all. if 243 would have been a dangerous idea in 308, the case would have been lengthened before winchester put their name on it. the 6mm bullet will just rattle down the bore.
Right, the smaller diameter projectile will go down the barrel and the case will fireform to the .308 chamber dimensions. At the range I shot at back home they had a .270 bolt action rifle up on a display board that someone had fired a .308 through. Totally destroyed the rifle.
The short answer is that a smaller bullet is not likely to do any harm. It will sound funny and probably not hit anything. But a larger bullet will blow up stuff. The example of a .308 fired in a .270 is perfect. Bigger bullet= ka-boom.
The rifle will not cycle and as stated probably not hit anything but the ground and you will have a 308 case. A 308 in a 30-06 makes a 400/308. When I was selling guns I had a customer bring in several cases like this and ask what they were. When I told him he said there were sixty or so cases left at the range. The number one thought is DON'T DO IT. There is the chance that the neck and /or part of the sholder will go doen the barrel and could be lodged forming an obstruction to give you a KABOOM on the next round.
