I think you should learn to walk before you run. Sporting Clays is noted by experienced shotgunners at my club as difficult. This comes from guys and gals who break 25 a couple of times a day. I suggest starting with trap, it's probably the most satisfying for someone just starting into the clay sports.
Well, I never was much at skeet. Trap seems to be my game, but like others here have said, sporting clays can be difficult. I consider myself a rather good trapshooter, but my first round of sporting clays really got my attention and sent me home with my tail tucked between my legs. I have broken 48 out of 50 on a sporting clays range, but with much practice (and some luck). I have been a waterfowl hunter since I was a child. Like others have said here, don't look at your score card so much as go and enjoy the event. Get the feel of what is going on. I have one friend that goes balistic if he misses a bird, but I don't. Just concentrate on your targets, have fun and enjoy the event. IMHO, that's what it's all about.
As a friend of mine calls it "golf for folks that own guns". It can be addicting but it is always fun. I have noticed that different ranges have different levels of difficulty. One range may be run by guys who hunt upland game and the other by guys who hunt ducks and geese. The upland guys seem to have closer faster targets and the duck and geese guys seem to have longer shots.
Never worry about your score, go shoot and enjoy. I have shot trap and find it a bit boring (sorry to the trap shooters), sporting clays just seems to keep my intrest.
When one of my shooting colleagues went to check his score the other day one of the more experienced shooters said "don't even look at it", and I guess there's some truth to that.
