Read up on the famous 1986 FBI "Miami Massacre." I believe the relevant name is Edwin Mireles.

He didn't have to reload one-handed, but he did have to run a Remington 870 one-handed after taking a .223 in the other arm. Yes, it happens.

Re: Emergency reloading with one hand

While you are reading on the "Miami Massacre", note how many of the participants got hit in the hands and arms.

I suspect you don't hear too often about people needing to use this skill because most of the people that need it, don't have it, and die from the lack. They never get to tell their stories.

It has pointed out (by Mas, among others) that there is a reflexive tendency to focus on the immediate threat (the gun) and shoot at that.

Supervisory Special Agent Gordon McNeil was wounded in one hand during the Miami incident, he was able to partially reload his revolver one handed and continue the fight before being hit again and taken out of the fight.

All you need do is bend your knees a little, and squeeze them together for a second.
This is the one handed reload taught by Larry Vickers and it works very well. It is very quickly and can be done kneeling or standing behind cover, with or without a holster, belt, or pocket. Personally, I would probably just go for the backup gun if available.
