Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

What make and model would get your vote as the best choice for someone looking to add a .22 rifle or carbine to their SHTF battery? I think the Marlin Model 60 would make a fine choice, and someone on a tight budget could do worse than to choose the Mossberg Plinkster or one of the little Savage semi autos. But overall, for reliability, accuracy, available accessories and the availability of the excellent Butler Creek 25 round magazines, I'd select the Ruger 10/22. Which rifle or carbine would you recommend as a SHTF .22?

10/22. Simple, rugged, reliable, parts are common.

Second choice, any good old-school bolt action in good condition.

What's your opinion of the Marlin 60, Snake? I've always liked them. Not quite as reliable as the Ruger in my experience, but not bad in that respect and quite accurate, too.

Bought one (actually, a tube-mag 75 carbine) CHEAP at a yard sale a few years ago. It doesn't impress me. Ever had one apart? What a mess.

Lol nope, but I do like the 60, maybe for sentimental reasons as much as anything else. My brother is thinking of buying an old but great condition Savage detachable mag-fed bolt for $150. I told him I don't think that's a terrible price. It has one of the little Bushnell ".22 scopes" mounted on it but he's shot it and says it's dead on.

Re: Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

After another season of cold weather I have given up on .22's as northern survival guns. Last night it was -21 below. I had been told to clean all oil from the gun and was offered a "spaceage" lube by a rep at a gun show. One 10/22 got their treAtment another got just scrupulously clean and a marlin 81 got baby oil. (don't laugh, it's never failed me in the cold). Rifles sat out on the porch for about an hour

The super stuff had three squibs out of a ten round mag. One of three with rem Gb's, two of four with dyna points, none with mini mags. The bare 10/22 mad three misfires and two squibs. The marlin had no misfires but several squibs. At that time I was cold enough to say the .22 still doesn't work reliably in the cold. My .32 single six and my .32 frame all went bang. I really wish someone would make a lever or pump in .327 federal.

What could a lever gun in .327 do that one in .357 could not?

Well the ammo weighs a lot less. .32 wad cutters at 600fps destroy almost no meat and very little hide. A single out round ball at the same velocity is nearly silent and drops bunnies, grouse andd turkey perfectly fine. A .327 would be a fine short range deer rifle if needed and the small frame of a model 25 reminton is a joy to carry

K, cool. I'd love to have a Marlin .357 lever but, not being a handloader, the .327 doesn't interest me much. I wouldn't be surprised to see Marlin, Rossi or Henry offer a .327 levergun, though.

10-22. My choice with an old Redfield Variable on top.

BUT, I have heard some recent quality complaints. Anyone bought a new plastic stock version lately?

Geoff
Who notes plastic parts do not necessarily mean low quality.

Re: Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

to all,

Remington models 572, the Fieldmaster
or
552, the Speedmaster.

BOTH will "handle" ANY modern .22 rimfire round, in "mixed lots".
(the 572 will happily digest BB & CB caps, too. - in my experience, the 552 "just doesn't like" BB/CBs.)

Re: Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

Agree with Stand Watie. I have the pump and have referred to it as my ".22 caliber 870" before. The fact that it will handle any .22 caliber round trumps (IMHO)most anything else in a survival (long term) situation.

Short term, having a case of .22LR HPs is like money in the bank, per Jeff Cooper.

Well a predecessor to the 572 was the Model 25 Remington which was available in 25-20& 32-20.

Re: Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

Back to .22s...
The SU22 has potential, since it can be folded into a very compact package and has a rail to accept a scope. Mine has the underfolding 'C' stock on it, which permits folding (and firing) with a magazine in the well. Half-loaded*, with the smaller 15rd mag makes a compact, quick-handling package. The original SU stock (which will store GI 20 and 30 rd AR mags, as well as K-T 10rd mag) won't accommodate the SU22 magazines, though.
*Magazine in, chamber empty.

I'd like to check out the AR-7 and that Springfield repro of the old AF .22/.410 rifle as well.
The Buckmark and Beretta carbines, adapted from their pistols would also be interesting.

there is only one, and that's the NYLON 66- they actually advise NOT to LUBE this thing- it's that tough- i've had one since the early 70's and it feeds anything that i care to give it, inluding that black russian grease ball stuff and mexican aquila crap

Re: Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

guntotin_fool,

YEP they did. - fyi, my friend Ed Harris HAS a model 25 in 32-20, which he likes very much for "critters".

my idea is a .357MAG "Model 35-2" pump, with 20" barrel, that will kill deer/hogs/coyotes at "woods ranges" (most of the places that i hunt WTs/hogs are so densely wooded that you cannot SEE them more than 30-50 yards. = last season, my 1st cousin killed a 6-pointer at 11 "regular steps" away!) of up to 100 yards.

Re: Best .22 survival/SHTF rifle?

I am a huge fan of the Model 25 and shoot both calibers. The .32-20 is not nearly as common as the .25-20 and accounts for only about 25% of the total production.

It is the slickest, smoothest pump to shoot and very accurate.
