Springfield m1a .308

Mine wallet doth protesteth!

This morning I picked up yet another toy. A Springfield M1A in a synthetic stock, residing at Academy Sports. A couple weeks ago I picked up a .22LR copy of the M-1 carbine by Citadel. I had the opportunity to examine the M1A then.
Well, this morning I went by, and to my surprise it was still there. A LOT of people had been gawking at it according to the clerks -- they weren't telling tales because back when I bought the M1 .22 atleast two people came by and looked at it.
Well, this fills out my EBR collection so now I have 5.56mm., 7.62x39, .30 Carbine and now a true battle rifle caliber, a .308. My one complaint is the magazine that came with it is apparantly only a PC 5 rounder. Oh well, Onto the internet and over to CheaperThanDirt and I will be getting a few 20 rounders soon enough.

Now I have two new toys to try out at the range.

Ow! I think I sprained my wallet!

Not many wallets that won’t feel it when buying an M1A. They’re fun, but expensive to feed…and they have large appetites. I’m a FAL man myself, but the M14 runs a not too distant second in my book; it’s a fine rifle.

Kevin Gibson,

As you are one of the gurus around this forum, can you save any real $$$$$ building up an M1A from one of the relatively cheap receivers, that are floating around the shows & surplus parts.

I agree. - I cannot afford a "factory" one on my pension. - At this point all that I have is a brown TRW fiberglas stock & handguard that was "thrown in" as "boot" on a trade that I made years ago.

yours, sw

Just keep looking. There are folks selling off their batteries as they age. The local Gander Mtn. had two CZ400 series bolt rifles one in .375 and one in .458. I suspect someone gave up their African dreams.
They also had a Springfield version of the FN-SLR on the used rack for 1500, I came , I saw and a fine young gentleman with a fading British accent locked his hand round it and sent his wife for the management. $1500 was the sticker on that one.
I think the day when you could save money part searching M-14 parts is gone forever. I haven't been to a show in over a year, but the parts guys even then were not carrying M-14 parts. If Springfield missed an original part on offer, it was a miracle.
Who hesitated and wuz loused!

Congrats, Tommy! I know you will enjoy that Springfield. Other than the price, I don't think I have ever heard anything bad about them. The one I had, which I unfortunately traded away when I wasn't thinking, was one sweet rifle.

It is the curse of this peculiar hobby/vice of ours that we end up spending more than we should.

But we could be doing worse things with our time and money.

I scored an almost-new NM M1A from a guy about two years ago. I met him to have a look at it, and couldn't believe what I was seeing...this thing was gorgeous, and the price was almost too good to be true. I couldn't whip out the cash fast enough.

When all was settled, almost as an after-thought I asked him, "Just out of curiosity, why did you decided to sell it?"

He looked at the ground and got kind of a sheepish look. "I bought it without telling my wife. When she found out, she went ballistic about other things we needed to spend the money on. Bottom line was I needed to get rid of it ASAP".

I felt terrible, but I'm getting over it.

That is a nice gun and a great score there, Captain Gyro. Congrats.
I am thankful in one way for not being married .... don't have to justify anything to the "ball & chain" -- er, uh, wife.
