Several members of BR.Com own one of these. The FR-8 is a rechambered, to 7.62x51, large ring 1943 Spanish Mauser. They were designed as training rifles for troops transitioning to the CETME series of rifle. They are nice little carbines, and pretty accurate, to boot.

Do be sure that what you have is an FR8, as there was also an FR7 that was a converted small-ring Model 1916 Mauser. There have been questions raised about the durability of this weapon, as the initial chambering was 7x57.

I have one, and we shoot it alongside our No.2A Enfield, and No.7 Enfield Jungle Carbine clone. It feels better to shoot than the Jungle Carbine, and is every bit as accurate. They do, however, require a sight tool from a CETME rifle. It's available from TAPCO.

JR, thanks for feedback. It is at a local pawn shop, for $150. I already load .308 for m1a, so ammo is no problem. What should I look for that identifies a fr7 from an fr8?

For $150, I would buy it regardless if its a FR-7 or FR-8. One way to tell them apart is that the FR-7 will have a bent bolt handle and two locking lugs, being built from the Spanish 1916 Mauser. The FR-8 will have a straight bolt handle and three locking lugs, being built from the Spanish 1943 Mauser.

i have an FR-8 with a bent bolt handle- everyone i talk to says that only the fr-7's has bent handles. i dunno, but my rifle and my buddies FR-8 have bent ones with three lugs.

this is one difference i know of. generally the fr-8 has the pistol grip like a '98k, because its made from a spanish '98. the fr-7 has a straight wrist stock. its made from a 1916 7mm, which is a '93/'95 type action.

150 is a great price either way. i get it whatever it is. if its an fr-7, you MUST load the .308 for 7mm mauser pressures (dont mix them up) even with the fr-8, you should still watch the pressure and keep the loads in the 8mm mauser range. although with the stronger action, you have a bit more tolerance for pressure. some commercial .308 win can be in the 60,000 psi range; WAY too high. milsurp 7.62x51 usually is around 50-52,000 psi.

i load the 7.62 for my fr-8 with about 40 gr imr4350 and a 125-130 gr fmj.
i dont have the charts in front of me, but as i recall, that puts me at about 35,000 psi, pretty close the the 8x57 it was originally designed for.

I have on order a FR-8. Will it shoot the Port 308 surplus ammo o.k? I also have a NO.7 Jungle Carbine clone, and it shoots the Port 308 all day long with no problems.........

yes it will shoot all of the surplus ammo- the only exception would be the indian crap- not the rifles fault, just bad ammo.,
