I'm looking... well I should say my dad is looking to pick up a Browning 1895 chambered in .30-06. I was wondering if somone could quote reasonable prices for the Grade one and Hi-Grade models offered... I know some on gunbroker are for sale NIB, and just was seeing If someone knew what a good price for one is.
I can't help too much with value as my book is getting old. AFAIK, the prices you see on the auction sites are generally in the ballpark. The Browning designed Winchester 1895 was manufactred from 1895 to 1940 (ish). The Browning '95 was produced by Miroku of Japan in 1984 and the model was revived by Winch in the '1990s. The Browning rifles are slightly different, mechanically, from the Winchester repros. The Browning uses the original style half cock safety, while the Winchesters have a cross-bolt arrangement. The Brownings (I think) go for about $800 in .30-06. More of the Winchester repros have been made, so they may be a tad less. The Hi-Grade guns are (obviously) a different story.
The Miroku '95s are excellent WRT fit and finish. Due to modern steels, they are beter able to handle the modern factory loads in .30-06. The originals suffered from bolt setback and peening when used with hotter factory '06 loads. Even still, the later production of '95s are not designed to handle the "light magnum" factory ammo. The Winch .405 is very desirable but probably not much fun to shoot. The gun is deceptively light and handy. Many have been rechambered to .35 Whelen.
Many '95 afficianados consider the .30 Krag (and .303 Brit) to be the ideal round(s) for the rifle. The factory sights are pretty poor and they don't scope particularly well (top eject) so a longish range ctg. like the '06 or .270 is somewhat wasted. The relacement of the factory sights with a Lyman or Marbles receiver sight is pretty common. There are repros of the #38 Lyman available.
Original '95s are highly collectible depending on the variant. The repros are really cool shooters and, in many ways, the better gun.
