I've heard about a spindle valve for the M1A. I am relatively new. Where is it at and how can you tell what it is set at, where exactly do you look (in front of the gas cylinder or behind it or underneath it)?

The spindle valve is located on the rear barrel ring of the gas cylinder beween the gas cylinder proper and the barrel. It looks like a small screw and is used to cut off the flow of gas into the gas cylinder when firing rifle grenades, which use an overpressured blank round. It can also be used to prevent solvents or other cleaners from entering the gas system when one is cleaning the barrel. The screw head is alligned with the valve so that if it is perpindicular to the barrel and gas cylinder, it is open; if it is parallel to the barrel and gas cylinder, it is closed.

A few months ago, I was building a kit for one of my customers and the spindle valve supplied was ported 90 degrees out of spec. That is, it was in the closed position with the screw slot perpendicular and open when parallel. It was a GI part! First one I've run into like that.
