Well, I have decided to try to keep a database of SN's to try to match them up. I am only using the most basic info attached to it such as user name and board to be contacted through should I get a match or +1 or -1.

If you want your email attached to your rifles, send that to.

I would prefer that when you send me your SN's send in the following format (doesn't need to be in numdrical order):

SA
XXXXXXXX
XXXXXXX
XXXXXXX

WRA
XXXXXXX
XXXXXXX
XXXXX

etc.

Maybe some day I will get a website up with a database where you can enter your info and search it yourself.

Also, if you come across any stubs of cut up receivers. send them, too, so I can account for them.

JAS, do you have a link for your info on serial # info?

And I didn't mean to say "cast", I shall fast for nine days and flog myself in repentance to the Garand Gods.

I looked it up in Duff's little blue book, "The M1 Garand Serial Numbers & Data Sheets". There are web sites that will give you the same info, but I have my books right by the computer so I don't bother. The little blue book is handy because it will fit in your back pocket for gun shows etc.

I've been keeping a database of full serial numbers for about 2 years now. I use the Microsoft Excel program. I record SN, Manu, Basic Description E.G. SG, M1D, etc and the source e.g. website, gunbroker, etc. I have close to 2600 full serial numbers.

Cool you guys, I've got Mr. Duff's book for the M14, but not the garand. Guess I'm gonna have to get that one next since I've gotten hooked on the M1's now.

Been looking at some of these numbers......There is a noticable lack of 5.3 mil SA's....Why is that? Anyone have 5.3's besides me?.....5.334,xxx.....5.374,xxx.....5.396,xxx....5 .330xxx.....

Might be a little off-topic but I was wondering about all those rifles (And guns) lost in sunken cargo ships; is there any way to eventually recover some or any of those? Were they packed to whistand a long term salt water submersion? Has there been any serious attemp to recover some of these weapons from relatively accesible ships? I wonder how much a crate or two of fresh factory-issued Garands would go for in an auction. Must be whole S/N batches laying somewhere.

Antonio,

Very doubtful.....

Even if:

1 It was known where a ship was that had M1's aboard
2 Said ship was in water shallow enough to be dived upon
3 The rifles were in "waterproof" containers

...... the chances that any form of water tight shipping containers would still be so after 60+ years is negligible. Water pressure beyond even 100 feet deep would have most likely crushed and flooded any container as the ship went down..... and that's if the tumbling and shifting and crushing of cargo as the ship sank didn't take care of it too....

Just my 2 bits,
Swampy

Yeah, I also thought about all those possibilities; having a boat I knw the amount of damage saltwater can cause to anything in just a matter of a few days, but dreaming is cheap, so.....

O.K.......Jack and I are the only ones that own 5.3 M1's.......They just got more rare and valuable wich is good for me!!!???...I did not think there was anything unusual about them but they must be less common than some others.....any other thoughts?
